Principal's Message

Brock Wilson

There have been crazy winds and lots of learning over the past fortnight here at Roxburgh Homestead Primary School!

Thank you:

A quick thank you to the many parents and students who have gone out of their way to congratulate me on being provisionally appointed as the substantive principal of Roxburgh Homestead Primary School. As I recently wrote to you all, I was welcomed so warmly by everyone in our community from my very first day and I truly appreciate that. This appointment allows us to look to the future with stability and confidence, knowing that the hard work and our positive trajectory will continue into the longer term. From here, I’m looking forward to continuing to work alongside all students, staff and parents to build the best possible learning environment for everyone.

Camp / Special Events:

Whether it is Book Week, our Father’s Day Event, or our upcoming 3-6 camp, there are so many special things that have happened or are happening soon at our school. Though you can read all about it in other sections of the newsletter, I want to take a moment to acknowledge all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to make special events like these come to life. I consistently hear from our families how much they enjoy opportunities to bring our community together, so I want those that do the heavy work behind the scenes to know how appreciated they are.

Parent Concerns:

One thing we continue to receive positive feedback on is our supportive and approachable wellbeing team. At our school, we are fortunate to have strong wellbeing leaders who are working hard to ensure that every child can thrive in our school. Having said that, like any school, our students are coming here to learn how to behave and how to deal with other people, just as much as they are learning how to read and write. This means that they won’t always get it right and will need to be taught boundaries and appropriate behaviour. We also educate children from a diverse range of abilities and circumstances, some of which require additional support from our team to interact appropriately with their peers.

If you have any concerns with how another child is behaving or treating your child, please reach out to the office and organise to speak with someone in our wellbeing leadership team. When concerns are raised, we take these very seriously and work alongside you to ensure that your child is supported and issues are addressed quickly. Please also note that it is never appropriate for a parent to approach another child regarding a concern with something that has happened at school. This also extends to parents confronting other parents on school grounds about behaviour concerns. It is important that we continue to set a positive example for our children and any concerns you hold regarding other students are to be dealt with through the school leadership team.

Meeting with Hume City Council:

In the last few months, I’ve received concerns from several parents and staff regarding the security, cleanliness and maintenance of our school oval. Some families may not be aware that the oval is actually Hume City Council property, though we hold permission through a shared use agreement that allows our children to access this space. At our next School Council, the Hume City Council will be joining us to discuss these long held concerns. If there is anything further you would like me to raise with the council on behalf of the community, please let the office know and I will ensure it is followed up on.

Hard Waste Collections and Illegal Dumping:

Another topic to discuss with the Hume City Council is the illegal dumping that happens quite frequently at our school. As a school that does not allow snacks to be eaten outside and diligently works to keep our yard free from rubbish for everyone, it is particularly frustrating when rubbish is dumped around our school grounds. With the number of windy days recently, rubbish dumped generally ends up in children’s play spaces. Though we will continue to work hard to clear this rubbish, we are also going to be increasing the security around the school to try to prevent this from happening. If you know any information to support us with this, please let our office know.

For those who may be unaware, the Hume City Council offers free Hard Waste collections for any resident. You can find more information about this here: https://www.hume.vic.gov.au/Residents/Waste/Hard-waste-collections

That’s all for another fortnight – keep smiling and we will see you all next week.

Kind Regards,
