LIBRARY NEWS

Book Week Wrap-Up and More!

What a wonderful Book Week we had! We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone—students, teachers, and parents—who helped make it such a great success. It was fantastic to see so many students get involved in the games and challenges, from the "Guess Who” Book quiz, the Bookworm counting competition, the library scavenger hunt, and enjoying guest readers in the Library. The students' enthusiasm and participation truly brought the library to life!

Meet our Books from the Blue Chair guest readers.

And the Winners Are…

A special congratulations to the incredible winners of our Books of the Year awards. It was a tough choice, with so many amazing stories to pick from, but these books really stood out for the judges of the Children’s Book Council of Australia.

  • Early Childhood Book of the Year: The Wobbly Bike by Darren McCallum, illustrated by Craig Smith
  • Picture Book of the Year: The Truck Cat illustrated by Danny Snell, text by Deborah Frenkel
  • Younger Readers Book of the Year: Laughter is the Best Ending by Maryam Master, illustrated by Astred Hicks
  • Older Readers Book of the Year: I'm Not Really Here by Gary Lonesborough
  • Eve Pownall Award for Information Books: Always Was, Always Will Be by Aunty Fay Muir & Sue Lawson
  • CBCA Award for New Illustrator: Grow Big, Little Seed, illustrated by Sarah Capon

These books are all available to borrow from the library or listen to on Storybox Hub.

HTS Book Week Winners

And the winners are in! We had a lot of fun participating in the Book Week competitions at HTS with so many of you taking on our three library challenges. A big shout-out to everyone who played our "Guess Who" competition—it turns out picking your favourite teacher's book is harder than it looks! Congratulations to our secondary joint winners, Kadee O'Connell and Bethany Pearce, who correctly matched 10 books to a teacher. And a huge round of applause for our primary winner, Huxly Mathers, who matched an incredible 14 books! The promise of hot chips was a powerful motivator, as classes 6G and 4WL tied for the win in the class competition.

Next up, a special congratulations to Charlotte Moore, the only student from K-10 to correctly guess that there were 232 bookworms in the jar. Don't eat them all at once!

Finally, a big thank you to Miss Cush (our Secondary Art teacher), who had the unenviable task of judging the K-2 Bookmark Design competition. The winning designs from Remedy Iskov (Kindergarten), Adeline Devlin (Year 1), and Amelia Cleal (Year 2) will be printed and proudly displayed in the library for everyone to enjoy.

Thanks again to all the students who participated and made this Book Week so memorable!

I'll be sure to add photos of our winners for the next newsletter.

PRC Reading Challenge Closes Soon

As the Premier's Reading Challenge draws to a close, it's time to get those final books logged. The challenge officially ends on Friday, 19th September, which means you have just a few weeks left to read and record your books. Remember to download your reading log and fill it out completely. Once you've finished, please return your log to the library for verification. Congratulations to Minhaya Sargeant, Isabel Caskey, Ella McGavin, Ashton Readett, Zahlia Ticehurst & Miette Sargeant.

New Manga!

Ever wondered where all the new books go? We just added a fresh delivery of Manga titles to the library shelves, but if you came by for a look, you might have found a very empty space! That's because within just ten minutes of being put on display, nearly every single one was loaned out. It's clear proof of why Manga is one of the highest-selling book genres in the world—our students just can't get enough! We'll be working to get more in soon, so be sure to check back.

Thanks again for everyone's support of Book Week! Happy reading,

Mrs Toni Fraser
