It has been an exciting start to Term 3 in Class 3! I have been really enjoying getting to know all the students and settling into life in Alice Springs.
Our camp to Tamara Date Farm was a great success in week 2. We got to try lots of different types of dates, build cubbies from (dethorned) date fronds, walk through the palms and of course, ride around the farm in the tractor trailer! Hot chocolate by the fire on the frosty mornings and spaghetti bolognaise were other camp highlights. Camp is always a special time for students and teachers to spend time with each other outside the normal routines of the school. It has been wonderful to see how settled the class has been in Week 3 after spending this time with each other.
In week 4 we will be finishing off our Main Lesson about Farming and Gardening. Students have been immersed in the story of an ideal farm, learning through narrative how animals, plants and people interact in a living ecosystem. We have reflected on our experiences at the date farm by composing a thank you letter to Kym which expanded simple sentences using adjectives, adverbs and conjunctions. This week we will be cooking some of the beautiful potatoes we harvested at the date farm (potato soup and bread is on the menu) as well as making butter in a jar.
Students have also been consolidating their times tables through making an illustrated booklet which shows the repeating patterns we can observe when we multiply and divide.
In the garden it is also exciting to see our grain crops starting to head – fingers crossed for an abundant harvest!
