Joy in the Middle of It All
This week in Worship, Stage 4 Teachers looked at the movie Inside Out and what it teaches us about our emotions.
In Worship, Riley is shown to have had a very bad day – everything seems to go wrong! She has been given yet another tuna sandwich, her hair is all wrong, and she trips over in front of her whole class! Her emotions - Joy, Sadness, Anger and Disgust - each try to fix things in their own way. Some of their ideas are funny, some messy, and some just don’t help at all.
It reminds us that we all have days like Riley. Days when nothing goes right, when we feel embarrassed, angry, or just plain sad. And that’s okay. God gave us emotions so we can feel life deeply. But it doesn’t mean we need to get stuck in those emotions either!
The Bible tells us something amazing in 2 Corinthians 6:10:
“Sorrowful, yet always rejoicing… having nothing, and yet possessing everything.”
This means that even when life feels hard, we can still have joy. Not because everything is perfect, but because we are never alone. God is always with us, and we can rejoice in that knowledge.
True joy doesn’t mean pretending to be happy. It means remembering that God loves us, He is always with us, and He gives us hope - even on tuna sandwich days!
So next time you’re feeling down, stop and remember with God, even in sadness, we can still choose joy.
