The Power of Forgiveness in Our School Community
One of the most profound values we try to nurture in our school community is forgiveness. Mary MacKillop had very strong views on this subject stating that “God loves each one of us… even those who have done wrong.” Here Sister Mary demonstrates her deep belief in the mercy of God and the dignity of every person, regardless of mistakes.
Forgiveness is not always easy. Whether it’s a disagreement between friends, a mistake made in the classroom, or a conflict on the playground, children (and adults) often face moments where forgiveness becomes necessary. These moments, though sometimes uncomfortable, are powerful learning opportunities.
In our school, we teach that forgiveness is not about forgetting or excusing harmful behavior - it’s about letting go of resentment and choosing to move forward with compassion. It's a value that helps build stronger relationships, teaches empathy, and fosters a more supportive and inclusive community.
We encourage students to take responsibility for their actions, to sincerely apologize when they’ve hurt someone, and to seek reconciliation. Equally, we encourage those who have been wronged to consider offering forgiveness - not just for the other person’s sake, but for their own sense of peace and emotional well-being.
We know that children learn best by example. When they see forgiveness modeled at home and at school, they are more likely to embrace it in their own lives. As parents and educators, we have a shared role in guiding them through these important life lessons. A simple conversation at home - asking, “How did you make things right today?” or “Is there someone you need to forgive?” - can go a long way.
Forgiveness strengthens our school values of respect, responsibility, and kindness. It reminds us all that mistakes do not define us - but how we respond to them does.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us create a culture where every student feels safe to grow, learn, and become a more understanding and resilient individual.
