5/6 CLASSROOM

English

Students have commenced planning and drafting their Information Reports on Convict Settlement in Australia. They have completed their introduction and first paragraph on 18th Century England and are now progressing to their second paragraph, which focuses on the reasons why the First Fleet came to Australia. The third paragraph will examine the arrival in Sydney Cove and the challenges of early settlement, followed by a final body paragraph exploring the impact of settlement on First Nations Australians.

We are grateful to Arti, our CES Speech Pathologist, who has introduced students to an effective strategy for active listening and note-taking. This strategy supports students in developing a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence for each paragraph. It has proven to be highly engaging and valuable in helping students identify and organise the key information required for their reports.

Maths

In Maths, students are developing their understanding of different types of angles and how to measure them accurately using a protractor. They are learning how to identify and calculate complementary and supplementary angles, as well as angles at a point and vertically opposite angles. Building on this, students are practising strategies to calculate unknown angles and applying their knowledge to solve a range of angle problems. These skills are helping students strengthen their reasoning and problem-solving abilities in Geometry.

RE

Students are now completing their Religious Education unit on the Sacraments of the Catholic Church. Throughout this unit, they have explored the meaning and significance of the seven Sacraments and how each one plays an important role in the life of Catholic Christians. As part of their assessment, students have selected one Sacrament to study in greater depth. Their task involves investigating its history and biblical foundation, identifying the signs and symbols used and understanding their meaning, describing the rituals and people involved, and reflecting on its ongoing importance for Catholic Christians today. This learning has provided students with the opportunity to strengthen both their knowledge of the Sacraments and their appreciation of their relevance within the Catholic faith and community.

Reading

For homework, students are encouraged to continue reading and writing in their diaries, as well as practising their times tables. Even a small amount of reading and times tables practice each day helps to strengthen learning and supports progress both at school and at home.
