NAPLAN
From Wednesday 12th, students in Years 3 and 5 will be completing NAPLAN testing in Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy. This takes place across a window of 9 days, with the majority of the testing occurring online.
Across this term, student have familiarised themselves with the testing platform, to give them the best opportunity to feel comfortable with the expectations next week. For Year 3 students, this is an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learnt in the first three years of school. For Year 5 students, it’s an opportunity to show their learning growth from 2023 to now.
Families will receive results during Term 3. Please remember that if you have lost copies of your child’s NAPLAN testing from previous years, you are able to email me directly (rowan.balzary@education.vic.gov.au) and I will be able to download a copy for you. I know a number of families are already looking at high school options for 2026 and beyond and schools often request this information as an example of an independent assessment of a student’s academic abilities.
We wish our Year 3 and 5 students all the best for next week.
Reporting Update
The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) published its revised mathematics curriculum (Mathematics Version 2.0) in 2023. All Victorian government schools were able to either implement or familiarise themselves with this curriculum during 2024. In 2025, all Victorian government schools must be using the Mathematics Version 2.0 curriculum. At Langwarrin Primary School we choose to start using the revised mathematics curriculum for school reporting from Semester 1, 2025.
On your child's previous report, the teacher reported against the 3 strands of the achievement standard for mathematics (Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability). Under the Mathematics Version 2.0 curriculum, your child’s teacher will report against the achievement standard as a whole, providing a single, aggregated score.
As the achievement standards reported on have changed, the first time you receive a report under the Mathematics Version 2.0 curriculum, it will only show achievement and not progress. For all reports after this, progress will be shown against the single achievement standard.
The VCAA made these changes to help teachers plan their teaching and learning programs in mathematics, giving them more flexibility to support students to link ideas within mathematics and also with other curriculum areas.
For further information, refer to the department’s policy on Reporting Student Achievement and Progress Foundation to 10.
