ROAD SAFETY

Parents or carers are responsible for their children travelling to and from school. This includes all forms of travel to get to school. We are asking that parents ensure all students travel safely and within the legal requirements.

Cycling/Scooters to and from school

Children under the age of 12:

may ride on footpaths, as can a supervising adult. They are required to give way to pedestrians and to wheel their bicycles or Scooters over pedestrian and children’s crossings.

Children aged 12 years or older:

are required by law to ride on the road.

Road safety authorities recommend that children under the age of 9 are supervised by an adult when riding on the road. Depending on their cycling skills and experience, some children over this age may still require supervision.

E Scooters

The states that Escooters can only legally be ridden by people 16 years old and above.

Helmets

Parents and students should be reminded that the law requires that all cyclists wear an approved helmet.

Approved helmets have the Australian Standards Mark TM (AS/NZS 2063) and will be marked as suitable for cycling.

In Victoria, Australia, cyclists must wear an approved helmet that is securely fastened to their head. This rule applies to all ages when riding in public places, including roads, bicycle lanes, and shared paths.

Exemptions

There are some exemptions to the helmet rule, including medical or religious reasons. If you have a medical condition that prevents you from wearing a helmet, you can get a certificate from a registered medical practitioner. You must carry the certificate with you and show it to an authorized person if requested.

Penalties

Police can stop you and issue a fine if you don't wear an approved helmet. The fine ranges from $231 to $925, depending on whether you take the matter to court.

If a student repeatedly does not wear a helment, the school will contact home and will no longer allow students to store their bike in the school. We must prioritise safe and legal travel to anf from school for our young people.

Storage at school

Students are not permitted to ride scooters and bikes in school grounds. Once students reach the school gates they must walk with their scooters or bikes to the bike storage area at the back of the school.

Secure areas are provided for storage, students bust bring their own locks to secure their bike and helmet.
