Lenten Season

Lent is a 40-day season commencing on Ash Wednesday and ending at sundown on Holy Thursday. During this season Catholics are called to enter more deeply into the mystery of Jesus’ suffering, death and Resurrection at Easter.

The staff and students attended Mass on Wednesday and received the ashes on their foreheads reminding us all of the significance of this celebraiton and the commencement of an important liturgical season in our Christian calendar. Thank you to those family members who joined us in this celebration.

The ashes we receive on our foreheads are in fact the burnt palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday. The season of Lent offers Catholics an opportunity to reflect on where they have failed to love God, their neighbour and themselves and to seek ways to heal what is broken. Alongside this reflection on how they are living their lives, Catholics commit more fully to prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Shrove Tuesday

The day before Ash Wednesday is known as Shrove Tuesday. The tradition was born out of followers trying to use up all their fats and eggs before Lent. Eggs and fats like butter are key ingredients for an indulgent batch of pancakes which historically and traditionally are used before we enter the season of Lent when we fast and abstain from over eating.

Our students engaged in this learning and tradition to make delicious pancakes. Here are some images of their learning.

Pope Francis

We continue to pray for the Pope Francis during his time of ill health. Let us be hopeful for his speedy recovery.

Sister Julie

We also pray for the Sisters of the Nativity, our nuns from the St Agatha'a and St Thomas the Apostle Parishes for the recent death of Sister Julie. The requiem Mass for Sister Julie was held on Monday at a packed church at St Thomas where she completed most of her work. The celebration of her life was presided by Bishop Greg Bennet and priests from throughout the Sale Diocese.

We will be conducting a fundraiser at our school to assist with the repatriation of her body to Nigeria, where her family live.

Stay courageous & hopeful.
