Specialists - Visual Arts (Mrs Bleicher)

It’s been a busy start to the term, with all students enjoying their time in the art room! Our lunchtime art club has also been a hive of activity each Thursday, with many children joining in on drawing activities, finishing work from art lessons, and colouring. By far, the most popular activity has been working with cardboard—especially boxes—to create some amazing constructions!

If you have any of the following items to donate to the art room, please send them to  school. Donations can be dropped off at the office, or students may bring them to the art room during their weekly lesson:

  • Paper plates
  • Small, clean boxes (shoe box size and smaller)
  • Paper cups
  • Paper towel cardboard tubes (no toilet rolls)
  • Ribbon
  • Small pieces of fabric
  • Cardboard from packaging
  • Sequins/buttons
  • Masking tape

Our Foundation students have been learning and practicing important art room routines to ensure they can work safely and happily. They have been exploring the art element of line through drawing, modelling, and construction. They’ve loved using oil pastels and food dye to create crayon resist art and making lines with playdough. However, a highlight so far has been creating their very own "crazy hair creatures!" We are now moving on to exploring the art elements of colour and shape, as well as looking at the artworks of Yayoi Kusama.

The Year 1/2 students have been thoroughly engaged in learning about the artist Yayoi Kusama, often called the "Princess of Polka Dots." The National Gallery of Victoria is currently holding an incredible exhibition of Kusama’s work—well worth a visit! It’s been wonderful to hear from students who have already attended and shared their experiences with the class.

So far this term, the Year 1/2 students have explored the art elements of line, shape, pattern, and colour through drawing and printing activities. They are now moving on to creating collages and modelling with air-dry clay.

The Year 3-6 students began the term by learning about different types of sculptures. They have been busily creating their own paper relief sculptures, which are now on display across the school. Throughout this project, students have been exploring the principles of design, with a focus on contrast, repetition, balance, and movement. They are now beginning to study the artworks created over the last eight decades by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, focusing on the art elements of shape, line, form, and space.

Thank you to all those students who are consistently coming to the art room with their smocks. Don’t forget Year 3-6 students may prefer to wear an apron.
