Weeks 4 and 5 have flown by and the Year 5s have been busy at work adding to their learning and practising their skills.
MATHS
Mr Condron is going to be very busy looking through all the garden plans the students have designed to keep the rabbits out of his veggies. Using their knowledge of area and perimeter, the students created a garden design that included a set amount of fencing and both rectangular and composite garden beds. See some designs from 5DW below:
LITERACY
Using our class text, 'How to Break a World Record and Survive Grade Five' by Carla Fitzgerald, the students have been learning how descriptive language is used to help the reader create a visual image. Using the description used in the book, the students drew an aerial view of the main character's street and used evidence from the book to annotate the elements included. Here is Sam's street as visualised by Max and Parsa from 5SD:
WRITING
Developing ideas is one of the most important parts of the writing process according to many authors. This week we practised developing ideas for Narratives and Persuasive texts then organising these ideas into a plan in preparation for NAPLAN writing.
INQUIRY
Did you know that there are about 3.6 million hectares of rainforest in Australia? WOW! Our travel around our great planet has taken us across Australia, over the Pacific Ocean and into The Americas - North and South America. Each student chose a country from one of these 2 continents and researched some interesting facts about it from population size to national celebrations. Over the next few weeks we will sail across to Europe and then overland to Asia.
SCIENCE
After learning about the types of planets in our solar system, the students worked in groups this fortnight to learn about one of the planets and then presented their learning to their peers.
On Thursday 27th March, Year 5 Students will have the opportunity to visit Scienceworks. This excursion links in closely with the Science unit they have been and will be working on for the remainder of the term, learning about the planets and their properties. Students will attend a show in the Planetarium before given time to explore the rest of the facilities. Students are asked to arrive at school no later than 8.45am, and bring with them their hat, water bottle, snack and lunch in a SMALL backpack (no school bags, please).
This excursion will cost $27 and will be on Compass on Monday for permission and payment. If you have any questions please ask your child’s classroom teacher.
House Athletics: Wednesday 5th March
Please ensure your child comes to school in their house colours and brings a HAT, SUNSCREEN, LUNCH and a DRINK BOTTLE for our day at the athletics track.
