Term 2 Sports

By Katie Cook

Term 2 has been an action-packed and highly successful one on the sporting front at Warrandyte High School. From local competitions to regional championships and national representation, our students have not only displayed incredible talent and determination but also embodied the true spirit of teamwork, resilience, and leadership. Here's a look at the highlights:

National Hockey Success - Jack Brennan

Congratulations to Jack Brennan of year 11, who represented Victoria at the 2025 Hockey Australia Boys U16 Championships in Adelaide. Jack helped his team secure gold, finishing as Victoria’s top goal scorer with 7 goals – including one in the grand final. He has now been selected for the Australian U16 squad, placing him in the top 24 players nationally. A phenomenal achievement and testament to Jack’s hard work and skill.

Sierra West – Talent Spotted

Year 9 student Sierra West turned heads at the State Netball Titles, impressing scouts and receiving an invitation to trial for the 2026 Netball Victoria Talent Academy. Her athleticism, decision-making, and court leadership stood out, and we’re incredibly proud of her progress on the elite netball pathway.

Intermediate Baseball Regional Finalists

With only 7 players available on the day, our Intermediate Baseball team showed enormous courage and teamwork at the Eastern Regional Finals. While wins were just out of reach, players like Chase impressed with strong pitching, and the team earned admiration for their commitment and positive attitude despite the odds.

Year 9 Netball Champions + Badminton Victories

An unforgettable day at Ashwood saw the Year 9 Girls’ Netball Team crowned Division Champions, after enduring 7 back-to-back games with no subs and just 10-minute breaks. Their grit, skill and support for one another were remarkable. Congratulations to: Arabella Bailey, Sienna Graham, Sierra West, Sarah Wheatley, Charlotte Williams, Grace Celentane, and Lily Celentane – now advancing to the Eastern Metropolitan Region Finals.

Our Year 10 Girls’ Netball Team also showed immense resilience throughout the day, facing strong opponents but maintaining positivity and effort. Standout performances included Mia, who scored 10 goals in one game, and Lila, who balanced scoring and coaching duties. Charlotte’s pep talks helped keep morale high all day.

In badminton, our Year 9 boys went undefeated to win the B division, while the Year 10 boys battled hard, playing thrilling rallies and surprising even seasoned opponents!

Cross Country Excellence

Despite drizzly conditions, 15 WHS students competed at Division Cross Country, with 10 qualifying for the Eastern Regional Finals. A highlight was Sierra West’s record-breaking win in the 15-year-old girls’ race – an incredible performance!

At the Eastern Regional Championships, 7 students represented WHS with pride: Arabella Bailey, Felicity Bailey, Owen Blackford, Grace Celentane, Lexi Hayes, Callum Ralstone, and Mack Whitbread. Whether it was their first time or a return to the big stage, all students showed commitment and outstanding sportsmanship. Their support for one another at the finish line reflected the strength of our school community.

Year 8 Interschool Sports Day

Our Year 8 students had a brilliant day participating in Netball, Soccer and AFL.

Netball: The team grew in confidence with each game, showing great improvement, teamwork and spirit.

Soccer: Despite playing with only 8 players, the team never gave up. A highlight was Lotus’ memorable goal, celebrated with cheers and a special team tribute at the day’s end.

AFL: With a mix of Year 7 and 8 players, the team bounced back from an early loss to win their second match and then finish 3rd overall in the supplementary final.

Student Umpires and Leaders:

Special recognition goes to our student leaders who made the day a success:

Netball umpires: Charlotte Williams, Sarah Wheatley, Arabella Bailey, Grace Celentane, Lily Celentane

Soccer officials: Ahoora Nikkhah, Mitchell Wellesley, Soheyl Nasiri.

Their leadership, professionalism, and confidence were outstanding. Feedback from other officials and schools was extremely positive.

Year 7 Girls’ Netball

This term, our Year 7 Girls’ Netball Teams had their first opportunity to represent WHS after their Term 1 sport was rescheduled due to camp. They improved with each game, applied their Sport Ed learnings, and finished with a 3rd place for the A team. A big thank you to the Year 9 coaches, scorers and umpires who supported the younger students and strengthened their own leadership skills in the process.

Years 7 - 12 Girls AFL and Boys Netball

A huge day on the sporting calendar, with 32 girls competing in the Division Girls AFL and 34 boys representing in the Division Boys Netball. What a turnout!

Girls AFL: Both junior and senior teams performed strongly, finishing 3rd and as Grand Finalists respectively. Special thanks to Eden Ferguson who took on role of senior coach, captain and player, to Zoe Whelan, and Darcy Welsh who played in the senior team and coached the junior team and to Eadie Gamble who captained the junior team.

Boys Netball: Five teams entered! The junior team impressed with 4 wins out of 5 games despite being two players down. The 2 intermediate and 2 senior teams also played some great netball demonstrating sportsmanship, leadership and development throughout the day

 Year 11&12 Sports Days

Over two days of competition the year 11 & 12 students gave it their all for the final sports days for the year achieving a lot of success.

Senior Hockey: With no subs and full determination, our hockey team dominated the day! Led by the natural leadership of Lachlan Williams, who stepped up as coach, captain and player, and supported by the elite skills of Jack Brennan, the team worked seamlessly together. Undefeated all day the team is off to Regionals in Term 3!

Senior Basketball: Despite no bench, both teams played hard with flair, energy and excellent sportsmanship. One near-dunk was a definite crowd favourite!

Senior Badminton

Our final Senior Sports Day saw 13 Year 11 students take to the courts for badminton. Facing tough competition, our students demonstrated teamwork, encouragement and resilience. A highlight was the B team’s win in their final game, bringing the day to a triumphant end.

Sporting Leadership in the Community

Beyond their own competitions, several of our students have also contributed to the wider community by supporting local primary school sporting events. This term, WHS students took on officiating and coaching roles at local Grade 6 interschool soccer and Grade 3 & 4 Hoop Time basketball competitions. Their professionalism, enthusiasm, and leadership were outstanding, earning glowing feedback from primary school staff and prompting requests for further assistance next term across a range of events. Congratulations to Owen Graham, Hunter Wason, and Wylie Hunter for officiating the Grade 6 soccer, and to Owen Graham, Hunter Wason, Cruz Motta, Mia Fadel, Cadel Vasie, and Mitchell Wellesley for coaching and scoring at HoopTime. These experiences have given our Year 9 and 10 sporting elective students valuable opportunities to develop and showcase their leadership skills while positively impacting younger students in our community.

Wrapping Up an Incredible Term

From first-time competitors to national-level athletes, our students continue to represent WHS with pride, perseverance and spirit. A massive thank you to our staff, student leaders and coaches who support our sporting program and help our students thrive both on and off the field.

Stay tuned for more sporting action in Term 3 — including the Eastern Region Netball and Hockey Finals, competitions for the Intermediate, Year 8 and Year 7 in Basketball, Hockey and Table Tennis and the opportunities provided to the students to further showcase their sporting leadership skills within the wider community.
