The Year 10, 11 and 12 students enjoyed a Big Day Out at the VCE and Careers Expo earlier this term. With dozens of booths enticing visitors with all manner of freebies (from teddy bears to pink hats), students had a good time sourcing lots of useful information.
It was crowded, and seats around the food kiosks were hard to come by, but there was still great opportunities to listen to expert speakers on a wide variety of topics. A worthwhile excursion for all our senior students. A big thanks to Ms Gazeas, Mr Blair and Mr Naidoo for their support on the day.
Year 9 students have all undertaken the annual Morrisby Careers provided by the Department of Education. It was a pleasure to see students approach this challenging analysis of abilities with determination and focus. As I write this article, students are getting ready for their 30 minute interview with a Morrisby counsellor, who will go through the results with careers advice to help students in selecting subjects for future career pathways.
Before subject selections commenced, Year 9's travelled independently to Box Hill TAFE for a tour and workshop activities at this institution. We walked from one campus to another viewing a large variety of learning areas including cookery, fashion design, visual arts, sports and fitness, nursing, mechanics, barbering, hair dressing and beauty, mechanics, carpentry, plumbing and more. Hopefully, this will give students a good sense of what it might be like to study a VET subject in their senior studies. Thank you to Ms Parsons and Ms Fry for joining us on this excursion.
Our Year 11 and 12 VM students have been applying their learning to practical situations in each of their studies. In Personal Development, the Year 12's planned and ran a team building activity for Mr Caruana's Drama class.
The Year 11 Work Related Skills students are undertaking hands on training in public safety, including firefighting skills. Soon the Year 11 students will be undertaking Responsible Service of Alcohol and Food Handling Certificates, which will help boost their resumes and job readiness skills. You can read more about VM in the Literacy section of this newsletter.
I would strongly encourage our students, especially in Years 10, 11 and 12 to take some time next term to explore a couple of tertiary Open Days. From universities to TAFEs to private colleges, it is just so helpful to visit and get a feel for what various organisations have to offer. The calendar of Open Days is available on Compass!
Finally, wishing students a safe and restful mid-year break, especially after the excitement of this term with such a lot going on in the careers area, from information sessions to counselling to subject selections. Remember to explore our Careers website and browse the newsletters uploaded there.
