All about the Program
What is the afterschool Numeracy Tutoring Program?
This afterschool Numeracy Tutoring Program is designed to support year 7 and 8 students once a week, for 45 minutes, to gain either additional support or extension with their maths studies.
Who will be supporting my child?
One of our 5 amazing VCE students. These students are currently undertaking either Year 11 General Mathematics or Maths Methods. They not only all have a great personality with excellent interpersonal skills, but they are also very hardworking students with a passion for sharing their knowledge to support others.
What will they do in in the session?
The student will let the tutor know what work they have been completing in class. The tutor will then provide1:1 support, re-explain concepts, scaffold worked examples with explanation, check working and question the students on their understanding to get to the right answer independently. Students can complete assignments or any other math related work.
How many students are in a group?
There is a maximum of 2-3 students in each group with some students receiving 1:1 tutoring this year that is tailored to their understanding.
Is there a cost?
No! It is totally free of charge for year 7 and 8 students. Even better, the VCE based tutors are paid as employees of the school allowing them to develop their skills for the workforce.
New Year 9/10 “Advanced Maths” Elective for 2026
We are pleased and excited to offer a new Advanced Maths elective in 2026 that will feature within the 9-10 elective block.
Specific students have been invited to take part. They were selected by teacher recommendations based on their persistent hard work and achievement data in their study of Maths.
The aim of this subject is to both enrich and extend students across many topics of mathematics. This subject is recommended for students wishing to pursue General Mathematics as their accelerated VCE subject in year 10 and/or Mathematical Methods in VCE.
Enrichment activities will include exploring maths in a range of real-world contexts, such as personal finance, science, engineering and technology. This will include introduction and use of various technologies, including spreadsheets, computer algebraic systems (CAS) and programming (pseudocode features within the Maths Methods curriculum).
Extension activities will be tailored for students in year 9 (aspects of the year 10 curriculum) and year 10 (aspects of the 10A curriculum which prepares students for Maths Methods).
Team Teaching Model at Year 8
A new team teaching model has been implemented at Year 8 Maths this term, where all students come together 2-3 times a week in the DLC open plan learning space to complete their Maths classes. This model was implemented to increase the ability to differentiate the work to support increased student outcomes. To read more about what differentiation is please see the Teaching and Learning page
Students are assigned to one of three flexible groupings based on the level of support/adjustments required and their pre-test data. The important thing is that these groupings are flexible. This means that students can move up or down according to achievement and understanding.
This has allowed students to be supported at their point of need. This includes more support (with there being 2 teachers in the classroom) but has also allowed students to be effectively enriched and extended where appropriate.
Some positive comments from the students in a recent feedback survey include:
"I have work set more to my level and learn new things
"it is so much easier to get help from teachers"
"its cool to be working with people who have similar thought process"
