VET Sport, Aquatic and Recreation – A Huge Term of Practical Learning!
Our Unit 1&2 and 3&4 VET Sport, Aquatic and Recreation students have had an incredibly productive and rewarding term, tackling a range of hands-on and theory-based units that brought learning to life both in and out of the classroom.
Unit 1&2 Students – Conditioning for Sport and Equipment Maintenance
The Unit 1&2 students focused on two key units this term. The first required them to develop skills in conditioning for sport, which involved learning about the body systems, muscle contractions, fitness components, fitness testing methods, and recovery techniques. Students applied this knowledge by selecting a sport of their choice, setting a personal goal, identifying five relevant fitness components, and conducting fitness testing. They then designed and followed a four-week personal training program, with weekly sessions in the gym. Post-program fitness testing allowed students to measure their progress and reflect on how effective their program was, identifying areas for future improvement.
Alongside this, students completed a unit on maintaining activity equipment. While working in the gym, they conducted equipment maintenance checks, carried out minor repairs, reported faults, and ensured equipment was cleaned and stored safely at the end of each session. The dedication shown by students in adjusting and improving their programs each week was outstanding, and many saw noticeable improvements in their chosen fitness components.
Unit 3&4 Students – Group Facilitation and Coaching
Our senior students completed two practical and engaging units. The first focused on facilitating groups, which they applied during the Year 7 camp. Students explored group dynamics, conflict resolution, goal setting, and group development stages—valuable skills for working with teams and leading activities.
The second unit concentrated on coaching foundation level participants. Students investigated the roles and responsibilities of a coach, explored different communication strategies, managed participant behaviour, and learned to reflect on their own coaching performance. This culminated in a three-week coaching placement at Warrandyte Primary School, where they planned and delivered athletics sessions—sprint starts and relays, long jump, and shot put—to Grade 3 and 4 students in preparation for their school athletics carnival. The feedback from the primary school students was extremely positive with comments including;
"It was the best 3 weeks of PE ever"
"I loved having the high school students teach us"
"The sessions were epic"
"Can the students come every week"
This real-life experience provided an eye-opening look into the world of coaching young participants. Students quickly built strong relationships with the primary students, and each week their confidence grew, along with their ability to adapt instructions, use demonstrations effectively, and manage groups with enthusiasm and professionalism.
Congratulations to All Students!
