A Dynamic Start for Business, Entrepreneurship, and Performance

We have hit the ground running in the Business, Entrepreneurship, and Performance Department, with students eagerly embracing the many opportunities we have offered. Two standout events in Week 2 showcased the diverse and dynamic nature of our department.

Year 11 and 12 Economics

We were fortunate enough last Friday to have Adam Fennessy, the Secretary for Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry, come in as a guest speaker to share his expertise in his industry.

One of his main points regarded the importance of biosecurity, and how it assists in keeping Australia’s farms disease-free from illnesses such as bird flu, which he noted was a major issue in the production of eggs in the United States in particular. Additionally, he talked about the progress that the agriculture industry is in reaching net zero emissions by 2050, and the impact of climate change on our farmers.

Mr Fennessy further disclosed his experience in the trade wars that Australia had with China in the post-COVID era, and the important meetings that he had to attend in order to keep our economy flowing.

His extensive experience in the agriculture industry helped us to have a deeper understanding of the importance of this sector in Australia’s economy, and we extend the biggest thank you to Mr Fennessy for taking the time to talk to us.

Year 11 and 12 Sport and Recreation

On Thursday 1 May, the Year 11 and 12 Sport and Recreation class had the exciting opportunity to attend a boxing incursion in the PE Centre. The purpose was to explore emerging, popular fitness activities. We were instructed by Miles Zalewski, a professional boxer from UBX Boxing and Strength in Clayfield.

The session focused on learning three basic techniques, including the jab, hook and uppercut. These skills are the fundamentals and are also a great self-defence strategy. The session was energetic and supportive ensuring everyone had the chance to practice their new skills safely and confidently. We also played and enjoyed a series of fun and interactive games designed to improve footwork, coordination and reaction time.

The incursion did not only teach us valuable skills but was a fantastic way to stay active while also having an enjoyable experience that left the class feeling empowered and eager. We cannot wait to improve our skills further in our next session in a couple weeks!

Looking Ahead

Our Year 10 Accounting and Business students are eagerly anticipating their upcoming workshop with BOP Industries, a Brisbane education company on a mission to inspire the next generation of young innovators.

Their aim is to prepare young people for the ever- changing future of work. This workshop will assist with the students upcoming business venture in Semester 2.

Students are also counting down the days to the new EDGE (Entrepreneurship, Design, Growth and Engineering) Building opening and we are sure the new environment will ignite many sparks in our student’s creativity!

Kilvington Grammar School Exchange

An exciting opportunity for Year 8 students to participate in an exchange with Kilvington Grammar School in Melbourne has presented itself for the week of Sunday 3 August to Saturday 9 August. The purpose of the exchange is to provide students with a co-educational learning opportunity to experience a different school community in another Australian city.

Please complete the Expression of Interest form below if your child is interested in attending.

The Better Journey – Empowering Young Men Through Respect and Reflection

Presented by Ben Russell from Empowerment Ed

Recently, our Year 7 to 9 boys had the opportunity to take part in an engaging and thought-provoking session led by Mr Ben Russell from Empowerment Ed. His presentation, titled The Better Journey, focused on guiding students through honest reflection about their identity as young men and their attitudes and behaviours towards others.

The session created a safe space for open conversation, encouraging students to explore the challenges that can arise when communicating with peers of all genders. Through a combination of practical activities and theoretical discussions, students unpacked the importance of building healthy, respectful relationships.

Interactive role-play scenarios helped students to recognise the difference between playful banter and hurtful behaviour, offering clarity on how to navigate social situations with empathy and integrity. A key message throughout the session was the importance of measuring our worth not by comparison with others, but by who we are and the values we live by.

We are incredibly grateful to Ben Russell for sharing his insights, experience, and passion with our students. His work has left a meaningful impact, and we are confident that the boys will carry these lessons with them as they continue their journey of growth and maturity.
