In Literacy, this is our last week looking at picture books by Margaret Wild, such as ‘Chalk Boy’, ‘The Feather’ and ‘Fox’. We have delved in to the themes evident in these books and written reading responses to each. In week 5 we will have a week dedicated to grammar and spelling and then move on to a unit on Poetry. Students will be given the opportunity to work in groups and individually and a continued focus will be on relationship building amongst class members, respect for self, others and the environment and giving best effort. The students are expected to complete 15-20 minutes reading each night as well as some students receiving work to help improve specific needs.
This term, in Mathematics, we have been looking at Measurement and Geometry. Shortly, we will be moving on to Statistics and Probability and Algebra, with a continual focus on important Number concepts such as Multiplication tables. Students will be given the opportunity to work individually and in groups to solve mathematical problems. A continued focus will be on empowering the students, allowing them to continue their growth and giving them the confidence to make mistakes and learn from them. Homework for mathematics consists of a take home sheet, MyNumeracy, incomplete multiplication tables work and, at times, student specific work.
Technology
7G is now three weeks into their textiles course after finishing a full term in food technology. They are currently working on a safety booklet, which needs to be completed before they can use the sewing machines. The students are enthusiastic and eager to create their aprons to showcase their talents to everyone. In the food technology classes, each student contributed impressive effort to ensure their dish was restaurant-worthy and completed to the best of their ability. Super proud of their efforts across the technology spaces.
Art
Science
7G is currently learning about forces. We have been talking about forces like gravity and friction. Students have discussed where and how forces impact them in their everyday lives. We have put our theory into practice by completing activities like rolling marbles along different surfaces to observe the effect of friction and modelling levers with classroom objects.
Humanities
The students in year 7G have been studying history and geography in Humanities. Using primary and secondary sources of evidence, the students identified key elements in Ancient history from the Out of Africa Theory and the role of archaeologists and historians in society, to Indigenous Australian Culture. They have also learnt how to read maps and create their own map of Australia’s rainfall using different sources. Students have also identified natural features of Australia, learnt about the water cycle and showed why people live near water sources.
PE/Health
PE: 7G are beginning their invasion sports unit, which includes netball, AFL and hockey. They will be learning skills and rules for each sport with a particular focus on game play. This will be their first opportunity to play a big team sport this year after athletics, fitness and net sports last term.
Health: we have started to explore respectful relationships and puberty. The focus will be on changes adolescents experience particularly during puberty.
