Learning Community 2

23A - Mr. Rennie

23B - Ms. McAsey

We’ve had a fantastic start to the term! Athletics Day was a highlight, with every student giving their best and having a go at all the events. It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm, teamwork, and encouragement on display. Students demonstrated our school values throughout the day and should be congratulated for their excellent behaviour, sportsmanship, and effort.

In Reading, we have been focusing on building our comprehension skills by using a variety of strategies. This includes developing our vocabulary through techniques such as sounding out words, chunking, and stretching to decode unfamiliar words. We have also been learning to identify character traits to better understand the characters in the stories we read

In Writing, we began the term by focusing on recount writing, learning how to organise our ideas clearly using time connectives such as First, Next, Then, and Finally. Students practised retelling personal experiences in sequence, making sure their writing made sense and followed a logical order.

We have now begun our exciting new unit on persuasive writing. Students are learning how to use strong adjectives, action verbs, and descriptive adverbs to convince their peers of their opinions. One of our favourite tasks so far has been writing to persuade others about who has the best puppet—a fun and creative way to practise persuasive language while building confidence in expressing a point of view!

In Maths, we have been learning about chance and how to describe the likelihood of events using words like certain, likely, unlikely, and impossible. Students enjoyed discussing everyday situations and sorting them into these categories. We also explored data collection by gathering information from our classroom and school. Using this data, students created bar graphs and practised interpreting information by answering questions based on what they found.

Reading & Diaries

It’s been fantastic to see more diaries coming to school over the past few weeks—thank you for your continued support in reminding your child. If a diary has been lost, please don’t hesitate to reach out so we can make arrangements for a replacement. Mr Rennie and Mrs McAsey are aiming to check each diary at least once a week, and we’ve been so impressed with all the wonderful reading that’s been recorded!

Spelling

We’ve recently resumed sending home spelling words, which will be added to your child’s diary each week. The first lists were sent out last week, and we encourage families to support spelling development through regular practice at home.

If your child doesn’t have a diary at school, their spelling list will be placed inside one of their take-home readers each Friday.

Week 2 spelling list is ‘y, as in pony

Library

This term, students will continue visiting the school library every Thursday, so please remind your child to return their books on time to ensure they can borrow new ones each week.

In addition to our weekly school library visits, students can enjoy borrowing books from the Mobile Library each Monday. If your child doesn’t have a public library card, please see their classroom teacher to collect a form and get one set up.
