š Supporting Your Childās Learning Journey: Understanding Learning Task Categories
Ā
At Lilydale Heights College we are committed to working in partnership with families to support every studentās learning growth. To help you stay informed and engaged, we use a set of clear categories to organise and assess student learning tasks. Each category serves a unique purpose and contributes to tracking your childās progress and achievement. Ā Below is a breakdown of each Learning Task category that you might see on Compass and how you can support your child in their learning.
Ā
š HW = Homework Task
Homework tasks reinforce classroom learning and encourage independent study habits. These tasks often involve practicing skills or preparing for upcoming lessons. Parents can support by encouraging a consistent homework routine and showing interest in what their child is learning.
Ā
š PT = Progress Task
Progress Tasks are regular learning checkpoints that help monitor your childās development in specific skills or knowledge areas. These tasks provide timely feedback and help identify where further support might be needed.
Ā
š CAT = Common Assessment Task
Common Assessment Tasks are formal assessments completed by all students across a subject or year level. These tasks ensure consistency in assessment and contribute to report grades. They give insight into how well students are meeting curriculum standards.
Ā
š LPP = Learning Pathway Progression
These tasks are designed to measure growth along each studentās personal learning pathway. They highlight individual strengths and areas for development, helping to personalise learning and set clear goals.
Ā
š§Ŗ SAC = School Assessed Coursework (for senior students)
SACs are formal assessments used in the VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) and contribute significantly to final subject results. They are assessed internally and moderated externally. Supporting your child during SAC periods with good study habits, time management and wellbeing is essential.
Ā
ā OT = Outcome Task (for senior students)
Outcome Tasks assess students against specific learning outcomes outlined in their VCE subjects. These tasks are often closely linked with SACs and focus on the demonstration of key subject knowledge and skills. Encouraging your child to reflect on feedback from Outcome Tasks can help them improve future performance.

Why These Categories Matter
Each task type plays an important role in building a complete picture of your childās academic development. Understanding these categories allows you to better support learning at home, track progress over time and engage more meaningfully with teachers. We encourage you to regularly discuss upcoming and completed tasks with your child, celebrate their efforts, and reach out to teachers if you have questions or need guidance.
Together, we can ensure your child feels confident, supported, and ready to succeed.
