ENGLISH / HISTORY FACULTY

This term, the English History Faculty has seen Year 11 hit the ground running and HSC students resume their HSC courses with the final stretch of the English and History schooling on the horizon. Below are some key highlights of what achievements our students are working towards in their learning.

English Extension 1 - Reimagined Literary Worlds

Our English Extension 1 Students are exploring Reimagined Literary Worlds. They have so far studied the science fiction classic novel Ursula K Le Guin’s, The Left Hand of Darkness (1969), and Tracy Smith’s poetry anthology Life on Mars (2012). Complex themes in both texts include: The power of humanity, technological expansion, gender roles, looming civilisational catastrophe, intergalactic empire and ‘… the Pope of Pop’, David Bowie.

English Extension 2 Major Work - Vastness of the Universe; Ask… Why?

Gabrielle Sunderland continues to work towards her English Extension 2 Major Work. The working Title is Vastness of the Universe; Ask… Why?

At this stage, she is working on a creative poetic piece that grapples with a journey through spirit, purpose, existence, God, and the Universe. A tall order indeed. The concept is highly abstract and an excellent challenge to pursue through the course. Some ideas also include: doubt, the power and limits of language, purpose, paradox, existentialism and acceptance.

English Advanced and Standard Courses

Students continue to work through deep reading and creative and critical responses for their respective HSC and Year 11 Prescribed Texts. Critically, students are growing in confidence writing and speaking with their personal voice in their academic writing. Elevating their modality to speak their opinions authentically is not only elevating their academic performance but also ensures the skills they develop in English are transferable into lifelong thinking and learning.

History HQ

Most Ancient and Modern History Courses are now in E07 which has been remodelled and has become a dedicated hub for the study and appreciation of History. This includes working with Stage 6 NESA curriculum but also embraces student interest and fascination with history more broadly.

Our History teachers energise the enduring relevance of the past and keep a fun and practical culture. Hands-on learning with handling of artefacts, and learning activities, which include archaeological digging, and mummification and funerary practices, make for memorable and powerful learning in History and Wyndham College.

HSC 2025 Opt-Out Notes

Year 12 English Studies and Mathematics Standard 1 students who wish to opt out of the HSC examination for these courses must return their signed notes as soon as possible. This is crucial for our planning and support for students’ pathways.
