As February rolls around, hearts and roses take centre stage in the celebration of Valentine's Day at Wyndham. While this time is often associated with love, friendship, and affection, it’s also a great time to develop a love for reading and literacy.
Reading is not just about an English HSC assessment or a hobby—it’s key to understanding the world and connecting with others. Famous author C.S. Lewis once said, “We read to know we are not alone.” This simple quote speaks to the heart of what reading offers: a chance to experience life through someone else’s eyes, whether fictional or factual. The more we read, the more we develop our ability to communicate, empathise, and thinking critically which are all important for the HSC and life.
For many students, developing a love of reading begins with the right book at the right time. Whether it's an engaging novel, a short story, or an inspiring biography, the first step toward a lifelong love of reading is finding something that sparks our curiosity. As a librarian and advocate for youth literacy, I tell students that the best way to know what books to read is to ask yourself what you like and what interests you. For those who are already passionate readers, volunteering to read to younger children or recommending a good book to a peer is a great way to spread the joy of reading.
