Coaches Corner

Get to know your coach!

We've had a few new coaches join RSC over the past couple of months. We want to give a very warm welcome to Matt Geddes, Ava Mountney and Lucy Woolard who will be working with our junior and competitive squads this term. All 3 coaches are former performance swimmers with RSC and are transitioning from Learn to Swim teachers to swim coaches. Matt, Ava and Lucy have all been involved in the club leadership team during their time as swimmers with RSC and will be wonderful coaches and mentors for our swimmers. Matt has finished his Competitive Strokes qualification and Ava and Lucy are currently working on theirs.

We have asked our new coaches a few questions so you can get to know them a little better! This week's feature coach is Matthew Geddes:

I coach: Blue, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Active, Jr State, State Target

How I got into coaching: I started off swimming at this club 6 years ago. I climbed up to National Target, while studying at school and swim teaching. I thought I should try my luck outside of the pool and started learning how to coach under Andrew and Brendan. Now I take a handful of squads, while developing my skills along the way.

Favourite stroke and race: 50 fly and 50 free

Favourite food: Chocolate Milk

Dream holiday destination: Travel around AUS in an old (but working) Nissan patrol, packed with a surfboard and camping equipment

On the weekend I love to…. Try my best to catch up with friends

A fun fact about me: I can eat a big mac in two bites. Try me.

Farewell to Coach Bella

We would like to announce that our wonderful performance coach, Isabella, will be leaving RSC in 2 weeks, with her last day being Feb 15th. Bella has been a ray of light in the club, always smiling and ready to work with our swimmers. She has been instrumental in improving our Strength and Conditioning program and in mentoring our junior coaches in this space. Bella has been working across the club in the junior, competitive and performance squads since October 2023 and took on the role of Performance Coach 6 months ago which saw most of her time spent with the State Performance squad. This group will really miss her and the experience she brought to her coaching, not long ago being a national swimmer herself. Her experiences as a high performance swimmer allowed her to connect and bring an insightfulness on how to get the most out of the swimmers in her squad.

Although we are sad to see Bella go, she is leaving to take up an incredible opportunity as the Assistant Head Coach of the Huntingtower swim club and manage the school’s EISM representative team.  The icing on the cake will be working alongside the head coach who has mentored her over the years both in swim teaching and coaching.

Bella, we thank you immensely for investing your time and energy into our swimmers and we wish you all the best. Congratulations on your new role and we look forward to seeing you around the pool.
