A Fantastic Start to 2025!

Last Monday, students moved into their 2025 classes, and it has been wonderful to see them settle in so quickly. The energy around the school has been fantastic, with students engaging in their learning, making new friends, and embracing new routines with confidence. Our teachers have been impressed with the enthusiasm and focus in classrooms, setting the tone for a great year ahead. We’re excited for all that’s to come in 2025!

School Community Charter

We are fortunate to be part of such a wonderful community at Chatswood. To maintain the strong partnership between school and home, I always like to take a moment at the start of each year to highlight the importance of the School Community Charter. This charter serves as a guiding document, outlining our shared values, expectations, and commitments to fostering a positive and inclusive environment for everyone in our school community.

At its core, the School Community Charter emphasises respect and shared responsibility. It encourages collaboration, celebrates diversity, and reinforces the importance of supporting one another in our learning journeys. As we welcome new students and families, it is essential that we all familiarise ourselves with the charter and the principles it upholds.

Early Student Pick-Up – Important Information

We understand that there may be times when you need to pick up your child early for a doctor’s appointment. Wherever possible, we encourage families to schedule these appointments outside of school hours to minimise disruptions to learning.

If an appointment during school hours is unavoidable, we kindly ask that early pick-ups be arranged outside of break times or movement periods, as it can be challenging to locate students during these times, even with an announcement.

To assist with a smooth and timely pick-up, please avoid collecting your child between:

  • 10:50 – 11:30 am (Recess)
  • 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Lunch)

Meet the teacher reminder

We invite you to attend our Meet the Teacher Evening on Tuesday 18 February. This is a great opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher, understand classroom routines, and learn how we can work together to support your child’s learning in 2025. The meeting will take place in your child's classroom.

  • 4:30 - 5:00pm: Optional Korean and Mandarin translated information session

     - Korean held in the Library & Mandarin held in the Hall

  • 5:00 - 5:30pm: Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2 classes
  • 5:30 - 6:00pm: OAK, Year 3 and Year 4 classes
  • 6:00 - 6:30pm: Year 5 and Year 6 classes

Road Safety

As we navigate through our daily routines, one aspect that demands our utmost attention is road safety. Drivers and traffic conditions can be unpredictable, and it's imperative that we instil in our children the importance of staying vigilant and cautious whenever they step onto a road.

So, to help keep our children safe, families are reminded about these key road safety points:

  • Stop, look, listen, think every time you cross the road. If your child is aged 8 years or younger hold their hand when walking near or across roads. If your child is 9-10 years old always actively supervise them.
  • Talk to your child about being a safe road user. Reinforce safe road behaviours by being a good role model! Children learn safe road behaviours from the adults who care for them. Talk about what you are doing to be safe when near roads, in the car and when riding.
  • Obey Traffic Signs and Signals. Teach your children to recognise and obey traffic signs, signals, and crossings. Explain the meaning of common signs such as stop signs, crossings, traffic lights, and emphasize the importance of following their instructions.
  • Be Alert and Predictable. Encourage your children to stay alert and be aware of their surroundings while walking or cycling. Remind them to avoid distractions such as using electronic devices or listening to loud music, which can impede their ability to react to potential hazards.
  • Watch Out for Vehicles. Teach your children to watch out for vehicles backing out of driveways, turning at intersections, or entering/exiting parking lots. Remind them to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of vehicles to ensure they are seen.
  • Be a Role Model. Lead by example and demonstrate safe road behaviour yourself. Follow road safety rules when walking or driving with your children and use opportunities to reinforce good habits through your actions.

Please speak to your child about these key safety points.

By teaching our children these essential road safety rules and modelling safe behaviours ourselves, we can empower them to become responsible and cautious road users. Let's work together to create a safer environment for our children and all members of our community.

Extended leave

We would like to remind you of the importance of regular school attendance for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6. It is crucial for students to be present at school every day to ensure they do not miss out on valuable learning experiences.

However, we understand that there may be occasions when your child needs to be absent. Justified reasons for absence include:

  • Sickness or infectious disease
  • Unavoidable medical appointments
  • Attendance at a recognised religious holiday
  • Exceptional or urgent family circumstances (e.g., attending a funeral)

Absences for these reasons will be marked as "Leave (L)" or "Sick (S)" as appropriate. Other reasons, such as family holidays or visiting relatives, will be marked as "Explained – Unjustified (A)".

Please be aware that students may miss significant learning while away from school. Therefore, we strongly encourage families to plan holidays or travel during school vacation periods.

Holidays taken by students outside of school vacation periods will now be included as absences. A Certificate of Extended Leave can no longer be granted for this purpose.

If you are applying for a planned absence which will exceed 5 days, parents must complete the "Application for Extended Leave Form". This form can be requested by emailing the school your child's name and class.

If the planned absence is accepted, a Certificate of Extended Leave will be issued, and the absence will be marked as “Leave (L)”. If the planned absence is not accepted, the leave will be marked as "Explained – Unjustified(A)" and no Certificate of Extended Leave will be issued.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in ensuring your child’s consistent attendance and academic success.
