Welcome to the 2025 Academic year! I hope everyone had a great vacation period and spent valuable time with their family and friends.
School of Entrepreneurs 2025: Embracing the Journey of Mastery
As we step into 2025, the School of Entrepreneurs is proud to introduce our guiding motto for the year: “Effort opens the door, mastery strives for more.” This powerful statement captures the essence of what it means to be a lifelong learner, a visionary leader and a relentless pursuer of excellence.
At its core, this motto speaks to the idea that success is not achieved in a single moment, but rather through a continual journey of growth and refinement. The effort we put in today creates opportunities, opening doors to new possibilities, however, true mastery is not about stopping at the first victory, it is about pushing beyond, striving for even greater heights and committing to constant improvement.
The Meaning Behind the Motto’s Visual Representation
To bring this vision to life, the accompanying image serves as a symbolic representation of this journey:
- The Open Door with Golden Light – This symbolizes the opportunities that effort unlocks. Every challenge faced and overcome is a doorway to new potential and growth.
- The Staircase Leading Upward – Success is not a destination but a continuous process. Each step represents the perseverance and commitment needed to advance towards mastery.
- The Figure Standing at the Threshold – A reminder that every individual has the choice to take the next step. This figure embodies ambition, courage, and the drive to go further.
- The Shining Peak – Excellence is not given; it is earned. This peak represents the pinnacle of success, achieved only through dedication and ongoing self-improvement.
- The Deep Blue Fading into Light – Growth and transformation occur along the way. The deeper the journey, the brighter the enlightenment.
Living the Motto
This year we challenge every student to embrace this mindset. Whether it’s launching a new venture, developing a skill, striving for better results or overcoming obstacles, remember your effort opens the door, but it is your pursuit of mastery that will take you to new heights.
Let’s make 2025 a year of fearless ambition, continuous learning, and extraordinary achievements. The journey starts now—step forward and strive for more!
I am very excited for the year ahead and the possibilities that will be unlocked as each student perseveres to be the best version of themselves.
Sending you my blessings for the year ahead.

From the SOE Assistant Principal
Last week I had the opportunity to travel with Year 12 students to the Benedict XVI Retreat Centre in Grose Wold for their senior retreat. It was a truly wonderful experience for our teachers and our students as they took time to reflect, pray, eat, sing, dance, eat, play and eat in preparation for their final terms of secondary schooling.
This time gave students the opportunity to think about their purpose, their lifelines and families, their dreams and goals to become the person that God made them to be. This was inspired by the words of St Catherine of Sienna who said, “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the whole world on fire.” We engaged in reflective activities that challenged everyone to stop and listen to the world, to stop and listen to the voice of God within them.
I wanted to share that it is in moments like this that the sons and daughters of the St Luke’s learning community show that they are great stewards of the future of our world. They have great love for the world and one another and their compassion speaks so beautifully about the quality human beings that they are growing into. It is with great pride in our year 12 students that we begin the 2025 academic year, they are rising to the call to become innovative problem solvers for a changing world, and they are doing this more often through the powerful lens of love.

What’s been happening in SOE?
English
This term in English, Year 9 will be examining the recognisable cinematographic style of auteur directors to determine how their distinctive style influences the representation of themes. As an Entry Event, students worked in a partnership to begin exploring known auteur directors such as Wes Anderson, Christopher Nolan and Tim Burton with a focus on their style, how they create mood, atmosphere and tone.

HSIE - Year 10 Professional Practice
Students in Year 10 will be studying a course called ‘Professional Practice’ this year. This course has been designed to amalgamate the Year 10 Life Design and Preliminary Work Studies courses. As a result, students have the opportunity to complete 1 unit of Preliminary studies in Professional Practice. This is a fantastic opportunity as it provides students with an insight into Preliminary subjects that they will undertake in Year 11. Students will learn the processes involved in undertaking a Preliminary subject, such as the rigor that is expected and rules around assessment.
CAPA
Preliminary Music students focus on learning musical concepts through the study of small ensembles and related repertoire. This topic helps them develop foundational skills, practical proficiency on their instruments, and an understanding of musical collaboration in performance and composition.
In the Preliminary Visual Arts class, students are focusing on frames and developing foundational skills essential for the HSC Visual Arts course. They have also been learning to analyse and articulate their thoughts on various artistic bodies of work. Additionally, students have begun exploring portrait creation with a focus on the subjective frame.
PDHPE
This term in Health and Movement Science (HMS), students are focusing on the foundations of anatomy in preparation for studying biomechanics later in the term. They have started by learning about the different types of bones, including short, long, flat, irregular and sesamoid bones.
SCIENCE
Year 9 Science started the year by learning about homeostasis, which is how our body responds to internal and external changes. This is accomplished by negative feedback; when a change occurs, our body has receptors which detect the change, a control centre then "decides" what to do about the change and sends a message to an effector e.g. a muscle which then carries out a response to bring our body back to a normal state. This picture shows Year 9 students drawing negative feedback loops to show how our body responds to low glucose levels.
Mathematics
We begin the year with a continuation of implementing and teaching an updated Mathematics Syllabus that has been developed state wide. At St Luke’s we have approached the new syllabus through a varied range of strategies in the School of Entrepreneurs to best meet the needs of our students. In Stage 5, we must cater for Core and Path content for each individual student so that they are able to meet the standards set by NESA as well as extend their knowledge and skills based on their current level. We have used the online platform Maths Pathways to meet the needs of each individual student with great success, utilising the data it provides to inform student learning.
We also hope to continue our success from the 2024 HSC results with a large portion of our students performing well in the Standard, Advanced and Extension courses. The collaborative approach of our students and teachers ensures all learning is elevated and we will strive to continue this approach this year.
Life Design
Students in Stage 5 have a wonderful year of learning ahead of them. As students delve into rich learning experiences, they get to explore:
- Who am I?
- What can I do?
- What problems do I want to solve?
Students across Year 9 and 10 will get to engage in A Future Anything Pitchfest, designing their own Odyssey plans, creating passive income streams, learning their adult strengths, choosing their senior subjects and designing a Legacy Project amongst a host of other creative project ideas. Stay tuned in future editions of the NET to see the beautiful work that they create!
Religion
Year 9
Students in Year 9 wonder, in light of the revolutionary words and actions of Jesus, if it is right to challenge authority. This term's transformative learning invites students to discern and interpret the relevance and impact of Jesus’ actions through the leds of Hermeneutics.
Hermeneutics might sound like a complex term, but at its core, it’s all about interpretation—especially when it comes to texts. In the context of the Bible, hermeneutics refers to the methods and principles we use to interpret scripture. This discipline is essential for anyone looking to dive deeper into the meaning of biblical texts and apply them to their lives.
This new skill that students will apply in their SOE experience of Religion will awake their understanding of the challenges and provide hope-filled opportunities of following the way of Jesus in our contemporary culture.
Year 10
Students in Year 10 wonder about the significance of love and social media.
At the moment, they have been discussing the transformative nature of an authentic relationship and how it nurtures human flourishing in their lives and others.
Through the lens of the four dispositions - Be Attentive, Be Responsible, Be Reasonable and Be Intelligent - and Jesus’ teachings on love, students will be exploring the characteristics of what an authentic relationship is. How it is established and maintained and how they can embody the values of love, truth and commitment to form long lasting relationships in their own lives.
