Boarding Update
Mr James Perrin, Acting Head of Boys' Boarding
It is with great enthusiasm that I introduce myself as the Acting Head of Boys Boarding. Having been part of the school community for the past five years as Head of Wolaroi House, I have seen firsthand the profound impact of a strong boarding environment on a student’s personal and academic development. Boarding provides young people with a unique opportunity to grow in independence, resilience, and responsibility within a structured and supportive community.
My passion for boarding stems from a deep commitment to guiding young people in their educational journey. Boarding is not just about accommodation; it’s about fostering self-awareness, a sense of belonging, strong relationships, and personal growth—pillars that underpin our approach to well-being. By immersing themselves in the boarding experience, students develop collaboration, respect, and perseverance—qualities that serve them well beyond school.
A dedicated network of staff ensures that boarders receive the physical, emotional and academic support they need. Heads of Boarding House are at the forefront, serving as mentors and role models, helping students balance studies, co-curricular activities, and personal well-being.
Our boarding supervisors and residential staff create a safe and welcoming environment, while the Health Centre staff provide essential medical and emotional care. Housemothers play a vital role in nurturing the well-being of our boarders, offering guidance, support, and a homely presence within the boarding houses. Our prep support staff further assist boarders with their academic commitments, ensuring they receive the guidance needed to succeed. Catering staff also play a crucial role in boarding life, providing nutritious and balanced meals that support the well-being and energy levels of our students.
Boarding staff work closely with our well-being and counselling teams in the day school to offer further support, ensuring that students always have someone to turn to. Additionally, our Student Support Officer provides one-to-one check-ins and structured programs tailored to different age groups, including the RAP course (Resourceful Adolescent Program - a school-based program to promote resilience and well-being in adolescents)for Year 7 and a Leadership Course for Year 12 leaders, ensuring students develop key life skills throughout their boarding journey.
Our boarding community is also supported by Chaplain, Reverend Sally Yabsley-Bell, who provides spiritual and pastoral care to students, offering guidance and support as they navigate their time in boarding. Her presence helps foster a sense of connection, reflection, and personal growth through the leading of Boarders Chapel.
We also encourage student leadership within our boarding houses. House Captains and Vice-Captains play an integral role in fostering a positive culture, mentoring younger boarders, and giving back to the community. By empowering older boarders to lead, we instil a sense of responsibility, service, and camaraderie, reinforcing the values of respect and integrity.
Boarding is a transformative experience, and I am committed to ensuring it is enriching and rewarding for every student. I look forward to working with our boarders and their families to create an environment where young people grow, learn, and prepare for bright futures beyond school.
