Year 6 Newsletter
Dear Year 6 parents and carers,
The heaters have been on for these very cold mornings and we have been blessed with some sunny autumn afternoons.
This week in Year 6
Maths: We continue our focus on multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions and decimals. This week we revisited the multiplication algorithm, working with 3 x 1 digit and 2 x 2 digit numbers. Some students have extended themselves into multiplication of decimals. Being confident in your times tables is so important in all areas of maths. We’d like students to be practising these at home regularly to build confidence and improve automatic recall.
Mathletics will be a great resource to practise and consolidate these concepts. Please reach out if you would like some additional maths work to do with your child at home.
Reading: Our current class novel is Black Cockatoo. We are enjoying this book and learning about Aboriginal culture. Our Literacy Circles have kicked off. This week we have finished practising the roles and selected our books. Groups have also met to set up roles. Students will be bringing their lit circles text home each night to use as their daily reading material - please ensure the book comes back to school each day for use in the classroom. Literacy circles work will be posted on Google Classroom each week and students can access this from home if they wish. We are looking forward to commencing our reading and roles.
Writing: This week we argued for and against students on a range of different topics such as whether vending machines should only dispense healthy snacks and if computer games should be used to teach. Students started planning for their persuasive piece. There was some enthusiastic debating to be heard!
Inquiry: our Term 2 topic is Government and Federation. This week we created a classroom island that has been colonised by the students. The students were very excited to set up their colonies and are already looking for trade opportunities.
HOMEWORK TASK
The Term 2 Homework task has now been set on Google Classroom and is related to our Inquiry focus on Federation. Students read the information on the powerpoint - PROBLEMS IN THE AUSTRALIAN COLONIES. They choose one issue to research further and write a diary entry from the time of the event. Students can choose to type the entry on the google doc, or handwrite it as an authentic journal entry. This task is due in Week 8 (Friday 7th June)
