Spotlight on Learning - Room 11

The Murray River

This term, students in Room 11 are embarking on an exciting journey of research and exploration as they delve into the rich history and geography of the Murray River. This project serves as a lead-in activity for our upcoming camp at the end of the term, where students will have the opportunity to experience firsthand the wonders of this iconic Australian river.

Throughout this project, students will engage in a variety of activities designed to deepen their understanding of the Murray River. They will investigate its origins, tracing its path from the Australian Alps to its mouth at Lake Alexandrina. Through research, mapping exercises, and hands-on learning experiences, students will uncover the environmental significance of the river, its role in shaping the landscape, and its importance to Indigenous communities.

By studying the history of the Murray River, students will gain insights into its cultural significance, exploring the stories of early explorers, settlers, and Indigenous peoples who have inhabited its banks for thousands of years. They will also examine the impact of human activity on the river and its surrounding ecosystems, fostering a sense of environmental stewardship and responsibility.

This interdisciplinary project integrates aspects of geography, history, environmental science, and Indigenous studies, providing students with a holistic understanding of the Murray River and its place in Australian identity. We look forward to sharing their discoveries and insights with you as they prepare for an unforgettable camp experience!
