Secondary Merit Events

Students have had a fun filled week of activities for merit events.

On Monday afternoon secondary students who have achieved any level (Bronze, Silver, Gold or Superb) had an actioned filled afternoon attempting the new Ninja Course while being ambushed by water balloons from staff, the students soon turned the tables and ambushed the staff as well.  Much thanks for Mrs Dreverman, Ms Merritt, Mr Howlett and Ms Mahoney who gave up their afternoon to supervise this event and got drenched for their efforts.

Students who have achieved Superb (all four levels of merit and 3 aspire awards) attended the Majura Shopping Centre to complete some last minute Christmas shopping followed by an eventful afternoon of jumping, flips and obstacles at flip out.  We even had a Taylor Off, with Mylee beating out her sister and her mum. Big shout out to Mrs Taylor for driving and Fiona for all her jumping efforts in support of our students.

On Thursday evening all students who achieved Superb in the merit scheme were awarded their certificates at the annual presentation night.

Life Ready

Amanda and Jenny from Flemings Property Services visited Year 11 Life Ready students in Week 8 to talk to them about the process of moving out of home. Students learnt about what to do when you want to rent a house, how to save money by sharing a rental and the first steps of buying their first home.

A big thank you to Amanda and Jenny for giving up their time to talk to the students.

Horizons Program

I recently had the incredible opportunity to take part in the Horizons program, an initiative designed to support young people aged 16-27 from rural areas pursuing careers in creative industries. Out of 75 participants selected, I was fortunate to be in a group with three other singer-songwriters, and together, we embarked on a journey that would shape our skills, confidence, and passion for music.

The experience began with a tour of Golden Retriever Studios where we had the chance to explore cutting-edge equipment and learn about the production side of music. It was inspiring to see the technology that helps bring songs to life. From there, we visited APRA Studios, where we spent time honing our songwriting skills, collaborating, and learning new techniques, the positive feedback on my writing was so helpful in getting me out of my shell. That night we went to Karaoke, and I sang Stay, Enchanted and Set Fire to the rain.

One of the highlights was a dinner and songwriting session, where we were able to put our creativity to the test in a relaxed and supportive environment. Throughout the program, we were mentored and although most of our sessions were held over Zoom, finally meeting in person was a rewarding and memorable moment.

The Horizons program has equipped me with skills, boosted my confidence, afforded me an opportunity to make friends with like-minded people, gifted me an allowance for the purchase of music equipment and expenses related to growing my career and given me exposure to the music industry that I would not have experienced otherwise. It’s an opportunity I will always be grateful for, and it has opened new doors for my future in music.

Thank you to the Horizons program for giving young people like me the chance to grow and thrive in the creative industries!

Trivia

On Friday the 13th of December students in Years 6 to 12 participated in the first annual Miss Walls’ Terrific and Terrifying Trivia.

Nine teams competed for the prizes supplied by the English, AMPS and TAS faculties with individual prizes also on offer throughout the afternoon. Each team had at least one person from each year group and were quizzed on the various topics covered in each class this year. The students also played a variety of individual games including Heads or Tails and Simon Says, which they excelled at. Once they got into the swing of things the Trivia became extremely competitive and was enjoyed by all.

After six grueling rounds of trivia the winner came down to a race across the Hall and our winner was Team 3. Congratulations to Summer Apps, Harrison Croker, Dylan Roberts, Mackenzie Klaassen, Caspian Franklin, Peter Gordon, Matilda Dennett, Lilly Humphries, Charlotte Gray, Mylee Taylor and Meghann Southwell.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, reporting that it was fun, entertaining and energetic.

A special thanks to all involved in the set up and running of the event on the day.
