Update from our Careers Adviser

It has been another big term in Careers in Term 3. We had a First Aid Certificate course with around 16 students attend in the Learning Centre. The second White Card course was held in Week 7. Fourteen students successfully completed the course. Now they can work on a construction site and be more aware of the work, health and safety issues that can occur on a construction site.

For the first time in a long time, Thomas Reddall High School hosted the Headstart Pre-Apprenticeship course in Plumbing. This was great for our school. The instructors came from TAFENSW. If any of the 4 students chosen (Kingston Venu Ah-Sam, Jayden Smith, Ryan Kunert & Zorym Shepherd) decided to do an apprenticeship in Plumbing they would have already completed at least 4 units of competency that they will not have to do later. The course included Plumbing theory, safety at school. The students also visited Rheem Australia, Enware Training Centre, Milwaukee Tools and MBA. After the 2 weeks, the students graduated. There were also students attending from Eagle Vale High School and Campbelltown performing Arts High School.

The school had its annual Subject Selection Night on August 11. This year the students from Year 10 had interviews with Mr. Melluish and Miss Feeney so they could properly choose their subjects in preparation. This was also covered in the Year 10 Careers Lessons. The night was a success as many parents were present and had the opportunity to discuss future pathways with their teachers. Year 8 students and their parents also attended on the night and we had a large number of parents turn up for this.

Students in Year 12 have now been receiving early entry offers from Western Sydney University, Wollongong University, ACU and UNSW. So far the news has been positive for our school. We have had plenty of successful students who received first round offers.

Many students have been attending Start Your Future courses in term 3. Most have chosen real estate this term. On September 11, the first round cut off occurred for TVET (TAFENSW courses). Most of the students who were interested did put their application in.

There are plenty of opportunities for our students to do work experience in various jobs around the Macarthur area. Work Experience usually lasts 1 week. Three of our Year 10

girl’s did work experience at Wests Leagues Club from September 7 thru to September 18. They enjoyed the practical experience and have the opportunity to go into the hospitality industry in the future.

Next term there will be more students who should be offered university places. Holiday job opportunities will come up. I encourage your students to regularly check the Careers google Classroom for updates on jobs, various courses, traineeship and apprenticeship opportunities etc.
