Year 1 Spotlight

An Amazing Year!

It’s the countdown to the end of the term and the Year 1s have all had an amazing year.

This term we have been lucky enough to visit the zoo, celebrated ART FOR ALL, participated in year level transitions, and we are now all looking forward to our end-of-year celebration at Cooper’s Settlement in Bundoora.

Zoo Trip

On 26 November, Year 1 students were buzzing with excitement with an excursion to the Melbourne Zoo. The visit perfectly complemented our Inquiry unit learning about living things and their features. Is there a better way to learn than seeing the animals in their habitats in real life?

Some of the highlights were:

  • “The penguins and seals because they glided through the water nicely.” ~ Luke S
  • “The butterfly house because they were so pretty.” ~ Edie
  • “When the Rainbow Lorikeet landed on Billie’s head!” ~ Poppy
  • “When we were waiting for the Koala talk, we could play in the maze. It was so fun! I was just running everywhere and I found the way out.” ~ Willow
  • “My highlight was when the playful seal pretended to bite my hand when I put my hand on the glass.” ~ Maggie M
  • “I loved the Butterfly House because they landed on my hand”. ~ Miia
  • “ My highlight was the Corroboree frogs in the reptile enclosure and dancing at the Corroboree disco.” ~ Stella

After walking over 10,000 steps the students were ready to have a big rest back at school and so were the teachers!

Beautiful Butterflies!

As the children had been asking to have class pets for the whole year, the Year 1 teachers decided to make it happen… well, for a week!

We had three chrysalises on each floor and we could see them transform into beautiful butterflies. After they had turned into butterflies, we kept them for two days for the wings to dry out, then we released them into our pollination garden.

Poetry

This term we have all become amazing poets! The students have become familiar with famous poets such as A.A. Milne, Roald Dahl, Kenn Nisbitt, Dr Seuss, and poetic features including; using rhyming (and not rhyming), rhyming patterns, rhythm, verses, imagery, similes and personification. These have then been included when writing acrostic, AABB, haiku, simile and shape poems.

Here are some examples of our poetry:

Luna wrote an emotive acrostic poem about her pocket watch and the passing of time. What a great use of simile and metaphor.

Pocketwatch

Precious, and

Of

Course it tells time.

Kind of

Exasperating some-

Times, but

Wait it is

As fast as a

Tiger and

Cheetah, so…

Help it slow down.

~ Luna

Banksia combined her name and nature with this environmentally-themed acrostic poem.

Banksia

Beautiful butterflies

And bees

Native for butterflies and bees

Kind plants

See

Insects and

Ants

~ Banksia

Billy paid tribute to his Grandpa Martin and his Croatian heritage through this heartfelt homage.

Martin

Medvednica Mountains

Amazing Djed

Riba catcher

Terrific kuhati

Incredible zagrljaji

Never zaboraviti

~ Billy

Acrostic Poetry

Come to watch the clown

Laugh at the clown when he does funny stuff

Oh my goodness he is so funny

Why does he wear a red nose?

Now he is really funny

~ Elke

Santa is very sneaky

kind person

Nice to all kids

Type of magical person

Amazing at making toys

~ Maddie

A monster went to the park

But it was too dark

There was a sharp thing
