Connecting Visual and Performing Arts with Indian Culture

Creating Ftures Together

The Arts and Technology areas have been abuzz with activity as they dive headfirst into the Connecting Schools to Indian Community (CSIC) program, a wonderful initiative created and funded by the Department of Education. The program's overarching aim and objective? To foster a sense of understanding and global citizenship within our school community.

Our students embarked on a captivating journey to the National Gallery of Victoria, where they immersed themselves in the art and culture of India and East Asia. Through these artworks, they delved into the rich and vibrant cultures, beliefs, and practices of these communities. What emerged was the heartwarming realisation that the common thread of love, care, and compassion unites not only these communities but people worldwide.

The sensory adventure continued as students tantalized their taste buds with delicious Indian street food during a culinary experience, following the wealth of knowledge gained at NGV. It was a day that enriched their lives with vibrant experiences in the arts and culture.

In the realm of Food Technology, students dove into the aromatic world of Indian cuisine, exploring the wonders of spices under the guidance of our in-house Indian culinary expert. Their senses of smell, taste, and sight were wonderfully awakened throughout the cooking process.

As we know, performance art is a powerful medium for storytelling. Our enthusiastic students had the privilege of being guided by an Indian dance expert in the graceful and intricate art of Mohiniattam Dance. This classical dance form, originating from Kerala, South India, weaves captivating tales from Hindu mythology.

These artistic and cultural programs will culminate in a grand Celebration Day and Luncheon, perfectly timed with the Diwali season – a time for joy and togetherness.

We, as a school community, feel immensely grateful for this unique opportunity to learn and immerse ourselves in the rich and meaningful cultures of the world, with a special focus on Indian culture. The Arts department, in particular, has flourished through this experience, and we look forward to more enriching endeavours.
