Student Update

Last week we went on an incursion to see Professor Bunsen doing science experiments. He got a cannon that he made with only a bottle and some air. He got the rubber ball and put it on top of the cannon he made. He squeezed the bottom of the cannon and boom! The ball flew out of the bottle and hit the wall. We learnt that using baking soda and water, you can make fake snow! It was an amazing incursion.

Curriculum Program Report

It’s term 4 already but we are excited by what we have to look forward to!

This term, our Prep students are excitedly learning about living things, where they live and how we can look after them. Later in the term we will have the opportunity to enjoy a visiting farm that will bring many cute animals for us to hold and enjoy. These experiences will support our writing as we develop simple information texts about the features these animals have. Through hands-on investigations, we will continue to look at what animals need to live and how we can help to care for our pets.

In Maths, our little mathematicians will continue to use hands on problem solving strategies to help solve many different worded problems.  They will also be looking for patterns using numbers, shapes and colours which can be a great way to have a conversation about how maths and specifically patterns are all around us. Enjoy a hunt for patterns!

While all this learning is going on, Preps will also begin transition sessions into year 1, starting in week 4! The preps will join with the current year 1’s who will support them during investigations and team building activities. Wow, what an exciting term 4 we have to look forward to.

In year 1-2, students will be mixing up a storm as we learn about the wonderful world of Chemical Science. We will be observing the physical properties of matter and how things can be changed through mixing, heat and chemical reactions. We have already got off to a great start with Professor Bunsen arriving at Goldsworthy with some mesmerizing, scintillating and extraordinary experiments that wowed the audience and blew our minds!

With both narrative and information text being taught in writing this term, we are sure to be enjoying some stories about mad scientists and exploding substances! Watch out!

In maths, our learners will again be sharpening their skills with place value and problem-solving activities. They will be exploring various problem solving strategies such as: making a model, drawing a picture, using a table and making a number sentence.

There will also be investigation into time and how to read analogue and digital times to the hour and half hour. This will also be followed by some work around statistics and the ability to read and interpret data and graphs.
