Year 3 - 6 Community

November 2024

Literacy:

Recount and Procedural Writing

This term, our literacy focus will centre on Recount and Procedural Writing, supported by engaging Mentor Texts and/ or an Author Study.

Potential Mentor Texts

Yirra and Her Deadly Dog, Demon & Jackie French’s Natural Disaster Series

Students may explore recount writing using Yirra and Her Deadly Dog, Demon by Anita Heiss, which offers great insights into storytelling and diverse cultural experiences.

Alternatively, students may also dive into Jackie French’s Natural Disaster Series, which showcases both recount and procedural writing through compelling real-life events, offering students strong models for their own writing.

Movie Response

Students will further develop their literacy skills by analysing films, focusing on narrative structure and character development to build critical thinking and narrative comprehension.

We are excited to see our students’ growth in reading, writing, and critical thinking this term!

Numeracy:

Students will continue to immerse themselves in problem solving using the Launch, Explore, Summarise (LES) method across all classrooms.

In Years 3/4, students will be exploring money, fractions data and time. With so many opportunities to connect maths to the real-word, parents are encouraged to support this learning by discussing household budgets, making change and reading both analogue and digital clocks.

In Years 5/6, students will be continuing to explore and apply fractions, and expand on this learning through BIDMAS. When looking at applied maths learning, students will look at location and transformation within geometric reasoning and data representation and interpretation. Families are encouraged to discuss statistics in all their forms either through the news, sports stats, observational data or probability.

Inquiry:

This term 3-6 students will be looking at the chemical science area of the curriculum. Students will be conducting hands-on experiments to explore the concepts of solids, liquids and gasses.

Year 3/4 students will identify that solids and liquids behave in different ways and have observable properties that help to classify them. They will investigate changes of state between solid and liquid and identify that this can be caused by adding or removing heat.

Year 5/6 students will compare the properties and behaviours of solids, liquids and gases. They will begin to see how matter structures the world around them.

All students will recognise questions that can be investigated scientifically and undertake investigations.

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

See XUNO for dates.

Year 3-4

Great Ocean Road Chocolate Factory

Students recently travelled to the Great Ocean Road Chocolate Factory to learn the art of tasting and making chocolate with European Chocolatiers and the knowledgeable team at a special hands-on workshop.

This workshop can demonstrated the melting of chocolate (solid to liquid) and how it solidifies again when cooled (liquid to solid). This is a practical example of how heat affects the state of matter. By handling and observing chocolate in different states, students can make connections to the properties of solids (holding shape, firm texture) and liquids (flowing, taking the shape of a container).

End of Year Lunch

As we approach the end of another fantastic year, we’re excited to announce our annual End-of-Year Lunch.

It’s a wonderful opportunity for students, staff, and families to come together and celebrate all the achievements of the year.

There will be delicious food, fun activities, and plenty of chances to reflect on our shared successes at each campus.

We encourage everyone to come and connect with the community. We look forward to seeing you there and celebrating a great year together!

Stay tuned for the date and more details.

Year 5-6

BioLab

Students will travelled to Bio Lab and undertake two programs. The Science of Cheating and Brain Matters. The Science of Cheating students have undertaken investigations to explore the different methods athletes have used to get the advantage in sport. As part of Science Matters students applied their knowledge to functionally test different parts of the brain, including reaction time, balance, psychology and the effect of physical activity.

Swimming

Year 5/6 students will be participating in an Intensive Swimming program. This program runs for 5-consecutive days and is free to the families.

Dates are as follows: Monday 11th November - Friday 15th November 2024.
