A message from Emily Murcott - Assistant Principal / Wellbeing Literacy Leader
What do to during the school holidays:
I hear a mixed array of feelings from parents as we embark on school holidays. However, I encourage you to be prepared and think of things early so your child’s school holiday also becomes enjoyable for you.
The holidays provide a wonderful opportunity to connect, create memories, and strengthen the bonds within your family. Whether you’re staying close to home or traveling, there are many ways to enjoy meaningful time together. I recommend you spend some time thinking about what you are going to do (or not do), then involve your child in deciding what they want to do (with boundaries), and although it is school holidays set routines.
Some ideas to include are:
1. Plan a Family Game Night
One of the simplest yet most enjoyable ways to connect is by hosting a family game night. Gather around the table with your favourite board games or card games and enjoy some friendly competition. This is a great way to engage everyone, from the youngest to the oldest members of the family. You can even introduce your children to games you loved as a child, sharing stories and laughter along the way.
2. Cook and Bake Together
The kitchen can be a wonderful place for family bonding. Consider planning a cooking or baking day where everyone can participate. Whether it’s baking biscuits, preparing a special meal, or even trying out new recipes together, cooking as a family allows everyone to contribute and share in the joy of creating something delicious. Plus, the memories made while cooking together will last long after the treats are gone. You could even freeze some biscuits for their lunches for when they return to school.
3. Explore the Outdoors
If the weather permits, spending time outdoors is a fantastic way to connect with nature and each other. You could go for a family hike, visit a local park, or simply take a walk around your neighbourhood. For those who enjoy a bit of adventure, consider planning a day trip to a nearby natural site like a beach, forest, or mountain. Being in nature provides a perfect setting for relaxed conversations and shared experiences.
4. Share Family Stories and Traditions
Holidays are an ideal time to share family stories and traditions with your children. Take some time to talk about your own childhood holiday memories, the traditions that were important to you growing up, and the cultural practices that have been passed down through generations. You might even start a new tradition with your family, creating something unique that your children can look forward to each year.
5. Volunteer Together
Giving back to the community is another meaningful way to spend time together during the holidays. Volunteering as a family at a local charity, food bank, or community event teaches children the value of helping others and can bring your family closer as you work together for a common cause. It’s a wonderful way to spread kindness and compassion during the holiday season.
6. Unplug and Be Present
Finally, consider setting aside some time to unplug from screens and technology. With the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to get caught up in our devices. Use the holidays as a chance to disconnect from digital distractions and focus on being fully present with your loved ones. Whether you’re playing a game, enjoying a meal, or just sitting together and chatting, being present is the best gift you can give to each other.
We hope these ideas inspire you to make the most of your holiday time with your family. The bonds you strengthen and the memories you create during this special time will stay with you and your children for years to come.
Wishing you all a joyful, restful, and connected holiday.
