Concert Band Wins Silver

On Monday 2nd of September, the Concert Band competed in the Victorian School Music Festival (VSMF) Intermediate Bands section. The VSMF involves school bands, orchestras, jazz ensembles and choirs in performing in some of Victoria’s premier performing spaces.

Before our band performed, we got to watch one of the other schools play, it was at that moment that we all realised how small our band really was compared to the other schools.

During the warmup, one of our saxophonist's saxophone stopped working, this made me sort of scared being the only alto saxophone left in the band to play. But Mrs. Newstead came to the rescue and saved the day!

Our band achieved silver in VSMF, and we are proud of all the work we put in.

The Concert Band is one of the best teams in the school all working together to play amazing pieces. The two pieces that we played for VSMF was Ironheart by Randle d. Standridge and It Lurks in the Shadows by Emma Olsen. These songs are fun and exciting to perform. This band mainly composes of Year 8 and 9 students, but there are three experienced Year 7 students in the band, as well.

We sounded amazing on stage; strong, and the songs echoed throughout the facility.  Our performance was  live streamed for our families to watch.

Some people, like me, were scared of performing on stage but conquered it with ease.

Once we had completed our performance, our conductor, Ms Smith, was super happy with the band. We could tell this because she was jumping around and just generally being happy.

Our other teacher, Ms Newstead, was impressed sitting in the crowd listening. They then had one of the adjudicators, Nick Matherine (the Artistic Director of the Victorian Youth Symphony Orchestra) come and teach us a few things on how we could make the pieces better and ready for the Gala. We learnt about when certain parts of the music have their time to stand out and when to be quieter than those people or instruments that have their special part.

On the way back our band ended up going to Maccas for a celebratory lunch! Our Euphonium player even bought 4 chicken burgers and had to eat them fast.

Attending the VSMF was a great experience for our Concert Band team members. It was great to hear other bands perform, learn from Nick, and have a chance to represent Wantirna College. We also learnt that 4 Chicken burgers in one meal should be for special occasions only.

We are looking forward to showing our school community what we have learnt at the Gala Concert on Wed 18th of September.
