Mathematics

Welcome

Hello Vermont families and welcome to the Numeracy section of the Nurlendi News! Here is where we will share any exciting resources, games or ideas that you may find interesting and enjoy using at home with your children.

Target Practice: An Operations Game

This activity is a great way for students to show their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills. Draw a target with various single digit numbers and one double digit number in the middle. Students need to use any operation (or a combination of operations) to equal the number in the middle using the numbers around the target number. Share with them that they can use a number more than once.

Students can challenge themselves by finding a way to arrive at the target number using only three of the numbers listed in the target.

In Grade 1, we have been learning about number lines and using them to help us solve addition and subtraction problems. This is a great game for all students from F-6 to play as you adjust the number line to include two, three or four digit numbers. All you need is a pencil, paper and a pair of 10-sided dice or deck of playing cards.

Good questions to ask while playing:  “What numbers can you make?”; “Why did you decide to make __ instead of __?”; “How do you know that goes there?”; “What are you hoping to roll?  Why?” (This is especially good to use if you get students to roll the dice one at a time); “What would you do differently next time you play?”
