From the Principals

Information from Mrs Mann, Mrs Cook and Mrs Strachan

Welcome to the latest newsletter, the second last for this Semester! Winter is certainly in the air, with super crisp mornings and chilly afternoons. Unfortunately, with winter approaching, it's not only the cooler weather we find upon us, the winter bugs are also running rampant. We strongly urge you to keep your children home if they are unwell. We have had many children reporting to sick bay, some by 9:10am. Many of these children are clearly unwell and should not be at school. We understand that juggling sick children as well as other responsibilities is difficult, but when a child is sick, they are not capable of learning effectively and run the risk of making other children unwell, too.

Our School Nurse, Mrs Burchell has provided some general tips for staying healthy in the coming months -

Ideas to help keep students healthy in Winter

  • Stay warm!
    • Students are encouraged to wear appropriate warm clothes for the colder weather. Jumpers over school tops and long pants instead of shorts or dresses.
  • Wash, Wipe and Cover to stop the spread of germs.
    •  Good hand washing, wiping of surfaces before eating or after coughing/sneezing and covering mouths with elbow before coughing/sneezing. Please your child how to blow their noses into a tissue and sneeze into their elbow.
  • Flu Vaccinations (highly encouraged for adults and children)
    • There has been 4 cases of Influenza A at the school through the week and is a serious medical condition for both adults and students.
    • People with this virus are infectious from the day before symptoms show and are contagious for 7-10 days. The virus spreads via droplets from coughing, sneezing, talking towards someone and when touching one’s nose mouth or eyes then touching other surfaces.
    • Please keep your student home until symptoms pass. Symptoms of the seasonal flu include a fever (temperature of 37.7 C or greater), as well as a headache, sore throat, extreme fatigue and body aches, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, vomiting and/or diarrhea.
  • PARENTS - These reminders are for you..
  • Vermont Primary School is a none smoking environment, so we ask that smoking and Vaping is not done while dropping and picking up students.
  • The student’s toilets are for student use only, adults are not to enter these areas when at the school. Please ask at the office if you need to use the toilet facilities when visiting.
  • It is the time of year for colds and flu so if you need to spit or cough anything up, please don’t use the ground or tap areas but use a tissue and dispose of this in a hygienic manner.
  • The drink taps and bubblers are for students use and we ask adults unless drinking from them don’t place anything in them or down the drains.

Thanks for your help with these things. Dianne Burchell Sick Bay Attendant Vermont Primary School 9874 2511 dianne.burchell@education.vic.gov.au
