Food Allergy Awareness Week

26 May - 1 June 2024

The Food Allergy Awareness Week theme is "When eating out, Always Ask, Always Tell".

Food Allergy Awareness Week is an initiative of Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia dedicated to promoting community understanding of food allergies and helping protect those at risk of anaphylaxis.

Australia has one of the highest rates of food allergies in the world, with more than 1.5 million Australians living with a food allergy. We also have one of the highest rates of hospital anaphylaxis admissions in the world. There has been a 51% increase in anaphylaxis presentations to emergency departments in five years, growing to more than 11,500 per year.

Food Allergy Management Tips

  • Ask whether your allergen is present in the food you might like to eat.
The risk of an allergic reaction increases significantly when eating out or eating anywhere away from home. Always ask to avoid accidentally eating something that you react to.
  • Tell people about your food allergy - it can feel awkward, like you’re ‘making a fuss’ or making it harder for others, but it's helpful to make others aware - because not talking about it, and presuming food is safe, increases the risk of a serious allergic reaction.
