Rio Grande do Sul, a state with nearly 11 million residents, is grappling with its most devastating climate event in history, and one of Brazil's most severe in recent memory.
The number of deaths from the rains in Rio Grande do Sul rose to 157 this Sunday (19), according to the balance released by the state Civil Defense at 6 pm.
In total, there are still 88 people missing. Authorities estimate that the catastrophe has affected the lives of 2.3 million residents of 463 municipalities so far — 93% of the total. The number of homeless people rose to 581,633, with 76,955 in shelters.
