CURRICULUM

📚 Reading

Students will read decodable texts, using their knowledge of sounds to segment and blend words. We will look at some 'irregular' words, and discuss the parts of the word that need to be learnt 'by heart'.

We will read and write rhyming words to assist with phonemic awareness by changing the initial sound to create a new word.

What can you do at home?

-Help your child to read their 'take home' book each night

-Explore the Reading Eggs library and Fast Phonics to read decodable texts. Also look at the 'Pip and Tim' and 'Wizz Kids' decodable texts on your child's iPads

-Make words with your sound cards and practise continuous blending

-Continue to revise the sounds on the sound/letter rings

📝 Writing

The mentor text this week is Wombat Stew. Students will use this text to form the basis of their writing experiences, like writing an ingredients list for their own wombat stew.

What can you do at home?

-Engage in fine motor tasks such as sorting, threading, writing, colouring, making, building, play dough and painting

-Reinforce correct entry and exit points for letters if your child writes at home

-Practise lower case letter formations on the app 'red writing'

🔡 Phonics

Our phonics focus this week is revising the short vowel sounds of a, e, i, o and u.

They will listen to the medial (middle) vowel sound of CVC words, to read and write them.

What can you do at home?

-Revise the short vowel sounds at home

-Make and read CVC words, noticing the medial sound

-Talk about words that rhyme. Provide a word for your child to eg. 'cat' and say / write as many rhyming words as you can

🔢  Maths

This week, we will expand on the concept of addition and making 10. Students will use tools like tens frames, number lines and unifix to join two number groups together, to create a larger total. We will begin with using the vocabulary of 'and' and 'is' (instead of 'plus' eg. 2 and 1 is 3) to say and create number sentences. They will also learn the strategy of 'count on', where you starting counting from the bigger number to add the smaller number.

What can you do at home?

-Use Mathseeds on the iPad to explore addition concepts

-Use the Friends of 10 app

-Make two groups (eg. toys, cars, lego etc) and join them together to find the total. Use the count on strategy when you do this!

🌏 CBL - Country

Students will learn about native flora and fauna. They will come up with ideas to help bring the 6 layers of Country to our Imagination Garden.

💻 Cybersafety

Students will complete the lesson, 'I never share my password'. They will understand how passwords keep our profiles safe and why they should be kept secure and never shared with others.
