STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
This Term in STEM, each year-level Discovery \ FLI unit connects to the Science curriculum.
Prep
Students are learning how to use their Chromebooks and navigate Seesaw activities. Additionally, the Preps are exploring animal habitats and living organisms' diverse external features.
Learning Intention:
To explore why animals live in different habitats
Success Criteria:
I can sort animals into groups based on their habitats (e.g., jungle, ocean, farm, desert).
I can identify animals and describe where animals live.
I can use my Chromebook to record what I learn.
Year 1 Discovery
Through experimentation, students enhance their understanding of material transformations. Their investigations included melting ice, churning cream into butter, and toasting bread.
Learning intention:
To investigate the process of physical changes of materials and understand the changes in states of matter.
Success criteria:
I can observe and describe the physical changes of materials.
I can predict about what will happen during experiments.
I can understand the concept of the changes in the state of matter.
Year 2
Students are discovering through scientific processes that everyday materials can undergo physical alterations or be amalgamated with other substances in various manners to serve specific objectives.
Learning Intention:
Students will understand the properties of chemicals and how they can change based on ingredients and mixing methods.
Success Criteria:
I can identify the main ingredients.
I can follow scientific procedures to create a science experiment.
I can describe the texture and behaviour of mixing chemicals.
Year 3
Students discover that materials can be induced by the addition or removal of heat. They also recognise that natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties.
Learning Intention:
Students will understand the concept of insulation and its importance in maintaining temperatures.
Success Criteria:
I can identify various insulating materials and describe their properties.
I can follow scientific procedures to create a science experiment.
I can collect data on temperature changes over time and analyse the results to determine which insulating materials are most effective.
Year 4
Students are learning about plants and how their growth varies with different conditions.
Learning Intention:
Students will develop their understanding of plant growth and the life cycle of plants
Success Criteria:
I can develop an understanding that living things have different life cycles and depend on each other and the environment to survive.
I can observe and document the growth of my plant at regular intervals.
I can demonstrate reflection by comparing my initial predictions about plant growth and discussing factors that may have influenced the results.
Year 5
Students engage in scientific inquiry to understand how solids, liquids, and gases exhibit distinct observable properties.
Learning Intention:
We are learning about the observable properties of liquids.
Success Criteria:
I will be successful if :
Year 6
Students discover that living organisms possess structural features and adaptations essential for survival in their respective environments. Students are discovering that the growth and survival of living beings are influenced by the physical conditions of their surroundings.
Learning Intention:
We are learning to unpack our inquiry question ‘’Have living things always been like this?’’
Success Critiera:
I can identify that living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment.
I can understand the importance of the growth and survival of living things
I can understand how living things are affected by the physical conditions of their environment
