Chess News

Last Friday a group of four Year 9 students competed in a Zonal Qualifying event against Geelong region’s best including Geelong Grammar, Trinity College Colac, St Josephs and Emmanuel College Warrnambool.

Joel Jomy had an outstanding tournament. Leading the tournament undefeated into the final he unfortunately lost his final game, finishing in 4th position from a field of 94, taking out the silver medal Y9-10. Other results were Shan Diviro (15th), Rhavi Calingayan (21st) & Teo Glaude (37th). BHS were ultimately pipped for overall 3rd position to Geelong Grammar by half a point. Joel, Shan and Rhavi have now qualified for the State Final in Term 4.

Excellent work from the up and coming junior Chess players. If you see Joel around give him a big congratulations as it was a mammoth effort on the day.

Chess Tournament Showcases Skill, Strategy and School Spirit

Ballarat High School recently hosted an Interschool Chess Tournament that brought together strategic minds from both Ballarat High School and Mount Clear College. The competition was intense, with each round pushing players to their limits. These two schools have been building a little rivalry and it continued on the 22nd May in Room 35.

Despite not having their full team available, the Ballarat High contingent fought valiantly throughout the event. Their resilience and determination were on full display, with standout performances from Tabias Jarrett, who secured third place overall with 6.0 points, and strong showings from Evana Selestin, Owen Hurtado, and Lance Lijo Kurien, all finishing in the top 7.

However, it was Mount Clear College who ultimately dominated the leaderboard. Thomas Wood delivered a commanding performance to claim first place with a perfect 7.0 points, while teammate Elijah Rolls followed closely behind in second place with 6.5 points. Lachlan Mewett also made a mark, finishing in fourth place with 5.0 points and helping Mount Clear  to secure three of the top four spots. These results bode well for some classic matches in the future.

The tournament was a fantastic showcase of interschool's spirit and chess prowess. While Mount Clear brought their A-game and walked away with the top accolades, Ballarat High School's players demonstrated grit, sportsmanship and promise for future competitions.

Congratulations to all participants for a brilliant day of chess!
