5/6 Classroom News

5/6 News

As teachers we are super proud and humbled by the leadership our students are displaying. Driving into the school in the morning, we often see our students putting out the flags or bringing in the bins from the curb-side without being asked. Then when walking into the staffroom we are greeted with the hive of Breakfast Club and our students going about their roles with commitment and pride. Then seeing our students at recess and lunch running the ball shed to ensure all of our students use our sports equipment with pride and return it is so impressive. Watching our students prepare for assembly each week and stepping up to any task Mr Hogan asks makes us proud. Our house captains had the mammoth task of cleaning out our sports shed and they did this without complaint. Our leaders are proud of their school as we are proud of them. TPS is in good hands with our senior students leading the school. Well done!

Campaspe Netball Tournament

On the 30th of May, our Grades 5/6 students went to netball in Echuca. I was in the girls team and we won all of our games. I played C, GA, WA and tried playing WD as well. I think I played pretty good. My team came first on the ladder and our amazing coach was Miss Reid. All of us came off 2 or 3 times. Our team was made up of Imi, Tippi, Rubi, Flo, Tahlia,  Ella, Maya, Ava and myself. Everyone had a fantastic day no matter what and were really good in the positions they played. We all put in and were all so supportive towards whoever was on the bench.

We all arrived at school knowing we had an incredible day ahead of us! Everyone was very excited; we were nearly screaming on the way to EDNA (Echuca District Netball Association) courts. We were pumped but some people were sort of nervous. When we finally arrived, we put our bags down, did some training and then soon enough it was time to play. After our games some of us went to the canteen, then did some more talking, and before we knew it, it was our LAST GAME! Some people were quite sad but it was also extremely exhausting. We won 4 games, lost 2 and tied 1. After the huge day, everyone felt like they were about to fall asleep. On the ride home, It was so tiring I felt like my legs were about to fall off. We got to school late, so as soon as we got to school we just grabbed our bags and then left to go home. A big thank you to our coach Brayden

Cooking Damper and Gold Panning in the Environmental Garden

As part of our Inquiry unit we have been learning about the Gold Rush and our Australian history. We learnt how damper was made from the rations often given to Indigenous Australians. More specifically, at the Wave Hill Station, Aboriginal people were paid a small bag of flour, a tin of tea, two bones and a tin of tobacco after working hard for long hours for a week on outback stations. We also learnt how 'Eureka' was yelled when gold was found on the goldfields. So we ventured down to our amazing Environmental Garden and cooked damper on the hot coals and panned for gold in the creek. We had a small taste of our history and were very thankful to Brett for always helping us to make these experiences happen.

Hands On Learning

On Thursday in Hands on Learning with Josh Ricky, Maya, Ada and Lachie worked on repairing a push mower. It was hard but we got there in the end. We even got some HOT MILO! We had to fix the springs on the mower because it wasn’t working or winding up meaning we couldn’t start the mower. Josh showed us how to do this because he is good teacher. We then cooked fried rice on the BBQ. We turned the gas on to cook the rice in a saucepan, cleaned the BBQ and oiled it, then fried the cooked rice, eggs and veggies. Finally we added soy sauce and salt, stirring it to make fried rice. It was out of this world. We then shared it with our favourite teachers Mrs P and Brett. We came back early.

Yesterday at Hands on Learning with Josh we started with looking at the lawnmower and quickly established we could not get the mower to start or work. So we just took it apart and looked at the bits and pieces. We were looking and learning. It was so cool.  Then Ricky made us delicious hamburgers. He cooked patties on the camp fire grill plate. Once they were cooked he put cheese on them and once they were all cooked we put them on a bread roll and added lettuce. Ricky had tomatoes too. Josh is the best teacher we could ever ask for.

Kane P - A Student Leader In The Spotlight

What are your leadership roles? Breaky Club and Young Leader

What made you want to be a leader? I like to stand up in front of people and be a public speaker. I am also a great helper and rolemodel.

Why does TPS need student leaders? We need leaders so the younger students can aspire to be like us. We also need leaders to give students a voice and to help around the school.

What is the best part of being a leader?  Getting out of class sometimes and doing fun stuff.

What are you proud of so far? Running the assembly and running school activities.

What is hard about being a leader? Doing the dishes in Breaky Club and sometimes standing up in front of everyone.

If you could say one thing about our school, what would it be? You get a lot of sporting and leadership opportunities.

Inquiry Showcase

Our students have been working super hard in all areas of the learning but especially in Inquiry. Our unit has called Museums in Motion and throughout this unit, students have been learning about significant Australia's historical events, reasons for immigration and people who have influenced and shaped our amazing country. They have investigated and researched the colonisation of Australia, the effect of this on Indigenous Australians, the Gold Rush, famous Australian people and finally, we they are showcasing all of this learning at a museum expo on the last Tuesday afternoon of this term. We invite all of our families into our classroom to celebrate this learning 2:30pm to 3pm on Tuesday, 1st July.
