Subject Selections Years 11 and 12 for 2026

Thank you to everyone who attended the Pathways evening. You will now have access to the Year 11 and 12 Course Book for 2026. This has important information about each of the pathways, as well as the courses that will be offered for study in 2026 and 2027. You can also find a video link to the Pathways evening recording for those unable to attend here.

Students will also have received an email from the timetablers with information about WebPreferences access for subject selection. Although we encourage students to make their selections early, they are able to change their subject preferences until the due date of Thursday 26 June. Some subjects will be offered every second year - these are clearly indicated in the course book- so please think carefully about a two year program when making decisions about courses.

Courses may not run if there are insufficient numbers.

IB Diploma Survey

As a part of the IB program, a student is completing their Extended Essay about potential electric vehicle road charges. As a part of this essay, there is a short survey about car usage and the effects of different factors on car choice pasted below. All responses will be anonymous, and accurate responses would be greatly appreciated.

The survey can be found here

Volunteers Needed for Year 10 Mock Interviews

As part of the Year 10 Career Development program, students are exploring opportunities for the future in a variety of ways. Integral to this program is raising awareness of, and developing, employability/ transferable work skills. One of these skills is that of communication. A Mock Interview, where students are interviewed by members of our community for a "coffee shop" position, is one experience we provide students to assist them in developing their skills.  To achieve the goal of 150 Mock Interviews we are seeking support from members of our school community.

Our Mock interviews are scheduled for:

  • Session 1:  Tuesday 24 June, 12.00pm - 1.00pm
  • Session 2: Thursday 26 June, 2.30pm - 3.30pm.

It is anticipated that there will be 4 or 5 student interviews scheduled per session.

If you are able to assist with Mock Interviews we would love to hear from you. Please contact Trish Menadue or Pete Gibson and nominate which day suits you best.

TCE Year 11/12 Reasonable Adjustment Applications

The closing date for Reasonable Adjustment applications to TASC closes at the end of the term, Friday 4 July.

To support students it is very important that these are done early and correctly and as soon as possible.

If your child has a diagnosis, or believes that they are requiring adjustments for exams and tests, please contact: Joe Cairns (TCE Coordinator), Catherine Gray (Access and Inclusion) or Annabelle Black (School Psychologist) so that we do not miss the opportunity for adjustments.

Moderation Day - NEXT FRIDAY

A reminder to parents that Moderation Day in Tasmania is on Friday 6 June

Moderation provides a state-wide opportunity for teachers to share expertise and support standards that are consistently understood.

There will be no classes on the Moderation day, as all teaching staff will participate in the Moderation day work and activities. Alternative arrangements will need to be made for students on this day.

Neurodiversity Day

Wednesday 11 June

We are pleased to welcome psychologist Emma-Rose Parsons back to The Friends' School and to continue our endeavour to create a more neuro-affirmative school environment. We invite parents to a Parent Information Evening on Wednesday 11 June, from 6:30-7:30pm in The Farrall Centre. This event will focus on supporting your child's self-advocacy and communication of needs effectively. This session will benefit both parents of neurodivergent and neurotypical children from Years 7-12.

Emma-Rose Parsons is a registered psychologist with extensive experience supporting neurodivergent young people and their families.

The evening will focus on:

  1. The importance of developing self-efficacy as children grow and gain independence.
  2. Understanding that the ability to advocate is often assumed, yet many students may struggle to do so or choose not to.
  3. How effective advocacy can be empowering for children and reduce anxiety and distress.

Emma-Rose will guide us in exploring these areas through a neuro-affirming lens, offering practical strategies to help our children build these vital skills in a safe, supportive way.

There will also be a Q&A session at the end, giving you the opportunity to ask questions and engage in meaningful discussion.

Please click here to secure your tickets for the event.

Marimba Concert

Tuesday 3 June | The Farrall Centre from 6.00pm - 7.30pm

Did you know that the word ‘marimba’ means ‘wood that sings’ in the African Bantu language? What a great way of describing the wonderful sounds made by our Years 3 - 12 students during their Marimba Ensembles. Students have been working with our Marimba teachers and tutors and we would love to invite you to come along to our annual Marimba Concert to enjoy the work of our ensembles.

All welcome, no tickets required.

Working with Vulnerable Peoples Pass - Senior Student Workshop

Monday 2 June at 2.50pm

In keeping with Tasmanian legislation to assist with the protection of vulnerable people and children, the School Service Program offers students the opportunity to apply for their Working with Children registration (WWCR). The WWCR legislation is managed by the Tasmanian Department of Justice. All individuals involved in regulated activity are required to obtain their WWCR; this includes any students aged 16 years and over engaged in volunteer (Community Service) work with vulnerable people and children.

The Senior School is running a Registration Workshop in W114 in the WNOats building on the Commercial Road Campus. The workshop runs between 2.50-3.45pm and outlines the sites, information and documentation students will require to successfully apply for their WWCR. Students will need their laptops, information relating to the full address of places they have lived in the past 5 years (including passports, etc), and original copies of points of identification such as birth certificate, passport and/or driver’s licence. For more information, students can consult Information for Friends’ Students about Volunteering.

Students can then complete their registration by making payment at Service Tasmania.  The current cost for volunteer registration is $21.36* (subject to inflation). Students can apply for reimbursement of this cost from the School via a reimbursement form at the Senior School Office.

Students should email Karina Churchill - Service Coordinator to indicate their intention to attend by 9am Friday 30 May
