Outdoor Education

The Year 9 Outdoor Education elective runs for the whole year (2 elective units). The objective of Outdoor Education is to provide a comprehensive educational program that specifically contributes to students becoming self-confident, disciplined, healthy, happy and fit. Students develop general camping as well as technical outdoor activity skills. Areas of skill development include map reading and navigation skills, camp cooking, investigating and utilising outdoor equipment, weather analysis, hypothermia and decision making. Leadership development is encouraged through student involvement in initiative activities, task organisation and small group work.

The theoretical component of the subject attempts to assist students in developing a greater understanding and appreciation of the necessary knowledge, preparation, exercise and equipment needed for adventure activities. This includes bushcraft, knots, shelters, safety in the outdoors and environmental awareness.

Students are required to investigate and complete assignments to consolidate their theoretical understanding. The recognition of different abilities, the development of a healthy body and an appreciation of our world and surroundings are emphasised from a Christian perspective.

Students will attend 3 camps for the year: Rock Climbing (5 days), Mountain Biking (2 days) and White-Water Rafting (3 days).
