Library

Welcome back to another library newsletter update. It’s been a couple of months since we last gave you an update on all things fun in the library. So, here we go.

Earlier this year we made a callout to CHS families for financial donations to the Library Fund. Wow, what a response we had. There were enough funds donated for this librarian to go on a massive book spending spree for the collection. Bookshop + one gigantic trolley + one librarian = loads of new books.

This year in the library, we have had an upswing in the jigsaw club. From 200 pieces to 1000 pieces, students have been up to the challenge. Let’s continue with this and who knows? We may get to the Australian Jigsaw Championships one day!

The CHS Lynette Noni fanclub were out in force at Readings Emporium for the launch of her new book, Wandering Wild. It was a fantastic event with loads of screaming fans and a very humble author. We now have personalised signed copies for the library. What a treat!

A new writing workshop is about to get underway as well. The Build Your Own Fantasy Fiction workshop will have our budding fantasy fiction authors creating their worlds, maps, characters and a story. This is  a great opportunity for any student with dreams of creating their very own fantasy world. There are still a few places available, so if you would like to be a part of this awesome adventure, just stop by the library and sign up.

Lastly, each year the library hosts a book sale for the students. If you have any books you were going to donate to an op shop, STOP!! We would love to have them for our sale to raise some more funds to purchase books for our very beautiful library. Any queries, please do not hesitate to get in contact.

Coming up in the library will be our very own CHS Reads presents - The Coburg High Reading Challenge. More details to come…..

Anyhoo, that’s about it for now. Here are a few images of the year so far.

Victorian High Ability Program (VHAP) Update

Each term, a group of Year 7 and 8 students are invited to participate in the Victorian High Ability Program — an initiative designed to stretch high-performing learners beyond the standard English and Mathematics curriculum.

Quinn excelled in the VHAP English stream, delving into the “Hope in Dystopian Times” unit. Their final project, The Phone, showcases some of the themes explored. You can view Quinn’s work on their website at the following link: VHAP Exceptional Work.

Badminton

Recently a group of enthusiastic Year 8, 9 and 10 Coburg Boys proudly represented Coburg High School in an inter school badminton tournament at Collingwood College. Our Year 8 boys emerged victorious and our Year 9 and 10 boys showed grit and determination against a highly skilled opposition. Overall, the excursion was a wonderful opportunity to experience badminton and display sportsmanship.

Football

Senior boys recently went to the first round of AFL.

We had multiple training sessions to secure a squad of 24 students plus helpers.

The boys were a little over excited in the first game and went against their usual football smarts and were all chasing the ball. Unfortunately they lost to ICS, which was very winnable. ICS ended up progressing through to the next stage.

We then won the next 2 games, through better ball use, smarter decisions and more communication, against AIA and Glenroy Secondary College. Super proud of all involved, especially their maturity at certain points throughout the day. It was a privilege for me to be able to coach, as I started at Coburg High School when most of the boys were in year 7.

A giant shout out to Matteo P who was extremely impressive with his help. Matteo put his hand up to coach and ran the interchange seamlessly. This freed me up to manage other variables that arose throughout the day. Thanks Matteo!

Year 7 and 8s Tackle Digital Safety with Brainstorm Productions

In Week Three, our entire Year 7 and 8 cohorts gathered in the gym for an engaging and thought-provoking live performance from Brainstorm Productions, focused on one of the most important topics facing young people today: digital safety.

The presentation tackled issues such as safe phone use, online trolling, and the emotional impact of public shaming on social media. Delivered through relatable characters and real-world scenarios, the production offered students a powerful message about the consequences of digital choices and the importance of respectful online behaviour.

Students learned about the ways that even small actions—like sharing a photo or posting a comment—can have lasting effects. The presentation encouraged them to think critically, act with empathy, and understand when it's time to speak up or seek help.

As always, Dani and Nait from the Wellbeing Team are available for any student who feels unsafe online or needs someone to talk to. In addition, Year Level and Student Support Leaders are here to support students with any concerns related to bullying, whether online or in person.

This initiative is part of our school’s broader commitment to promoting digital responsibility and supporting the wellbeing of every student. We encourage families to continue these conversations at home to help reinforce the importance of staying safe and kind in the digital world.

Alpine Camp

The School for Student Leadership is a residential government school for Year Nines that runs for a term. Term one this year Coburg High got 5 places at the school and us, Quinn, Ella, Harry, Fin and Sanjay were selected to go. We’ve spent this term experiencing, reflecting and participating in this program and it has been the learning journey of a lifetime. Our term was filled with many outdoor activities including, surfing, mountain biking, raft building and other Expeditions. We lived, worked and learnt with various students of other schools from all across Victoria, and in those 9 weeks have formed some amazing bonds. We lived as a community and worked to maintain a healthy and respectful environment while also working on our personal skills as young leaders. We were given many leadership opportunities to run classes, organise events and enhance our pre-existing skills. This term was a life changing experience and we are very grateful to be among the 2% of Year Nines in Australia who get this opportunity.

Robotics Club

Coburg High has started a Robotics club to participate in the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) for 2025! We are currently loaning a robot from another more experienced team to participate in an off-season competition in Blackburn High School on the 11th-13th of July. We plan on trying our best in this competition in the hopes of getting recognition from sponsors, to be able to acquire enough money to put towards getting our own robot so we can participate in the FRC championship in Sydney next year.

Every Wednesday after school we meet in AG.03 from 3:25 to 5:00pm to discuss plans and work on different things. Some members are focusing on hardware, some on coding, and some on advertising for our club. Our cooperative teamwork is what makes our mission possible. We also have a few parents who take precious time out of their incredibly busy days to support our ambitious project. We have been working through initial teething problems with software getting all the systems setup but will soon have a massive robot driving around.

If you would be interested in joining our team, contact Shane Nash. (shane.nash@coburg.vic.edu.au

We would love to have you here!

Soccer

Year 7

Kindly coached by Year 10 Jackson M, a fantastic group of Year 7 Coburg High boys played a round robin tournament against a set of local soccer teams. Great sportsmanship and determination was on show all day long. The boys started with a 2-1 loss against Glenroy Private, but didn't let that dampen their mood. Coburg proceeded to draw our next match 0-0 with Glenroy Secondary College and finish on a win against Australian International Academy of Education 2-1. Coburg then advanced to the 3rd - 4th showdown with Al Siraat College, which was a gruelling match. The level of talent on both sides was high, with Coburg's defensive line proving difficult to break through and a strong line of strikers. The match finished 1-1 and meant that the winning team would be decided by a tense penalty shootout. Coburg topped Al Siraat in the penalty showdown. Overall, it was a wonderful day out playing soccer, they finished 3rd out of 8 teams, earning Coburg a bronze finish!

Intermediate

A strong Coburg Intermediate Boys Soccer team progressed from their group without conceding a goal. In a shortened semi final, a late corner proved to be Coburg's undoing against the eventual tournament winners.

Australian Beach Volleyball Junior National Championships in Coolangatta

Coburg High School’s Buckley P and Eltham High School’s Ben G made waves at the Australian Beach Volleyball Junior National Championships in Coolangatta, held from March 24th to 27th, 2025. Competing in the Under-16 Boys category, the duo showcased incredible skill and sportsmanship, finishing 8th out of 22 teams nationwide.

Buckley and Ben’s journey was outstanding, advancing all the way to the quarterfinals and earning the distinction of being Victoria’s top team in their age group. Their grit, determination, and camaraderie throughout the highs and lows of elite-level competition were truly inspiring.

Congratulations to Buckley and Ben for their achievements and for representing their schools and state with pride.

Would you like to share your extracurricular achievements with our school community? We would love to celebrate them with you! Please send any articles and pictures to Virginia at info@coburg.vic.edu.au
