What's Happening in the F/1 Classroom?
In Literacy this fortnight we have been focussing on the difference between b and d. The students used their thumbs and sayings such as ‘bat before ball’ and ‘drum stick after drum’ to remember the shape of each of the letters and assist in differentiating between them. We practiced writing the letters correctly, and words beginning with each sound.
We have been continuing to use our growing letter/sounds knowledge to help us to segment words into their individual sounds when writing them, as well as blending sounds together when we're reading.
We have continued to explore addition over the last two weeks. The children have been focussing on using counters, blocks, counting charts and the counting on method in order to solve addition problems. We have also started to work on worded problems, focussing on finding the important information within the problem and how to represent these accurately as equations. Some of our students are now being challenged to complete multi digit equations with regrouping.
We have been fortunate enough to have the 4/5/6 students visit us twice in the last fortnight for some buddy reading. The older students have listened to their younger buddies read the books from their reader folders and help guide them in decoding unfamiliar words. The F/1's have had the opportunity to listen to their older buddies read and have also completed some shared reading of picture story books or class made texts from our reading area.
A reminder that our Show and Shine box has started to go home to families over the last few weeks. Please check your Dojo messages to find out the date your child will be sharing. Also a reminder to send through your child's photos for our history unit for your child to create their own individual timeline of their lives.
If you have any questions please come and see Gen or Maddy.
We will be having a footy colours day on the last day of term, Friday September 20th. Students will be encouraged to wear their favourite sports team's colours and we'll do some fun activities as a celebration of the end of term 3. There will also be hot dogs available for lunch and the school day will end at 1:30pm.
Don't forget to check the reading diaries for up coming dates.
