Great Southern Griffins

Griffins Winter Sport

We officially ended the winter sport season for Volleyball, Soccer, Hockey and Netball on Sunday with our club wind-ups. It was a day filled with food, awards and player acknowledgments.

This season we fielded eight Volleyball teams, 11 Hockey teams, 18 Netball teams and 11 Soccer teams. Our players are to be commended on the way they conducted themselves throughout the season, from training sessions to game days. It has been a solid effort by all and we can be proud of what we have achieved. Our final games were played on Friday and Saturday, with an impressive 10 teams making it in their grand finals in Hockey, Netball and Soccer. Five teams walked away with the big win.

A special thank you to our coaches, managers, committee members who've worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this season a success. Our winter sport teams will now spend the next few weeks finalising the season and planning for next year. Please remember to return any player tops and equipment back to your managers before the start of the school holidays.

We are excited to start the new season of Basketball in early October. Training days will be finalised today, keep an eye out for emails that will be sent this afternoon.

Griffins Netball

Griffins Netball Club celebrated its successful 2024 season on Sunday 15 September. 18 netball teams, 18+ coaches, 18 team managers, and many parents watched our teams presented with their Fairest & Best Players, Coaches Awards, and Club Awards.

Congratulations to all our winners, and a special mention to our winning team, the Griffins 7, coached by GSG Year Twelve student Katie Hartzell. They won the A6 Division Grand Final in a great match against Narrikup 7.

Thank you to everyone involved in a fantastic season. It was a beautiful club wind-up, and we are so excited for the 2025 season!

Stay tuned for our upcoming AGM.

2024 Season

Junior Teams: Three junior teams were placed into the mixed competition to ensure they could play. Unfortunately, there was no junior league for Year Eight to Year Ten students. Despite this, AVA should be commended for their efforts to keep the junior league alive, as it is crucial for the club and association’s future. However, our juniors faced much tougher competition, which was challenging for both them and the opposing teams.

Mixed B: The grading for Mixed B worked well initially, but we had a number of Year Ten players withdraw after teams and fixtures were formed, leaving us short on fixtures.

Women’s Premier: Our Country Week girls’ team was placed in this division, and it worked well. Ella took on most umpiring duties, and the players enjoyed the level of competition.

Parents/Alumni/Friends Teams: In 2023, we had two such teams, but none this season. One team applied late, and we couldn’t accommodate them as registrations were already full.

Coaches and Managers:

It was great to have Harley (Year Ten student), Mischa and Archie (Year Nine students), Ella and Olivia (Year Eight students) all assisting where they could with coaching our teams this year, especially at fixtures on Tuesday nights.

Also highlighting our wonderful managers, Mrs Jo Gors, Ms Eve Collin and Mrs Hollie Benson for their work on WhatsApp, phone calls/Messenger and Heja to highlight just a few responsibilities over the season.

Also, appreciation to Mr Paul Donaldson and Ms Charlie Warren for assisting with the senior Country Week (CW) teams and Paul with the Physical Education studies team.

Men’s Premier: At the start of the season, we were informed that the CW teams should play in Mixed A. Consequently, Griffins added our CW boys’ team to Mixed A, only to find NASHS and ASHS placed in Men’s Premier, which was disappointing. This situation led to some CW boys playing in the Men’s Premier side, affecting our performance and results. We chose to prioritise junior development over winning, which impacted our standings.

Resignation: I will be resigning as Chairperson of Volleyball for 2025 to focus on teaching and learning for Health and Physical Education and the improved promotion of Interschool Sport, including Country Week which will be exciting and demanding.  I’ve been in this role since 2017 and I have been a part of Volleyball since 2012 in a coaching role for Country Week and junior teams.

Thank you.  I may still play but will not be coaching for the foreseeable future. All queries can be directed to Mr Tom Moir, Chairperson of the Great Southern Griffins Sporting Club.
