Year Seven Japanese Students Embrace the Way of the Sword and Enjoy Obento

Our Year Seven Japanese students recently had the exciting opportunity to delve deeper into Japanese culture by experiencing the martial art of Kendo and Japanese Obento. Having spent two terms learning about family members, the Japanese writing system, and self-introductions, we were eager to explore this ancient tradition.

Kendo, which translates to "way of the sword," is a Japanese swordsmanship art that emphasises discipline, respect, and both physical and mental training. Participants use bamboo swords, known as shinai, to practice striking designated targets on their opponents' protective armour, called Bogu.

The incursion provided us with a unique and interactive experience. We learned about the history and philosophy of Kendo, practiced basic techniques, and even had the chance to watch skilled athletes’ spar. The precision and control required to wield the shinai was very impressive.

The Year Seven Japanese classes also got to enjoy the great bento box for lunch that was filled with delicious Japanese food. An obento box is a Japanese style packed meal for a single person for take-out or to enjoy at home. We really enjoyed the bento box, it was delicious, and it was an amazing time for everyone. It was a good opportunity for the Year Seven students to try out the Japanese food culture.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Parkdale Secondary College's Ms Weeraratne, Mrs Shimazoe and our resolute Japanese staff for organising this wonderful incursion. A special thanks also goes to the Melbourne Budokai kendo club for their guidance and expertise of kendo, which made this experience truly memorable for our students.
