Spotlight on Learning
Year 5 Camp
Recently, the Year 5s went on camp to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat and it was a blast! Here are the exciting highlights from the trip. Upon arrival, the students divided into their free-time groups and explored the town. They visited various old-fashioned shops, including the confectionery, where they learned how lollies are made. Afterward, they tasted the freshly made, warm lollies, which were so delicious that one was never enough. The sweet aroma in the confectionery was incredible, like a hundred scented candles burning at once. They also explored the candle shop, among others.
The adventure continued with a thrilling ride down the minecart mine and a climb through the walking mine, which involved 52 steps down and 53 steps up. Despite being tiring, it was worth it to see the second-largest golden nugget ever found in the world.
In costume school, the classes were split into 5C at St. Alipius and 5S at Red Hill National School. They experienced 1850s-style learning, practiced cursive writing, and wore medallions that represented different roles such as Ink Monitor, Door Monitor, Bell Monitor, and Toy Monitor.
The students also enjoyed watching the 'Gold Pour,' where a gold bar worth $370,000 was created and shaped. To top it all off, they experienced three spectacular light shows, which were both amazing and fascinating.
